Keys and key programming

Hi all, looking for some help/advice.

OK, so my MR2 just came with one master key and one valet key. Having lost and had remote control keys die on me in the past, I thought I'd get a spare, and reading on here, I read that you could buy a used one on Ebay, pop it into a new shell and reprogramme it.

So that's exactly what I did. Well, partly, anyway. Bought the used master key -- and it looks to be of the right type. Bought a new shell to pop the innards in. It's a little bigger than the original key, but not significantly so. The buttons fit, I can push them and the red light lights up.

So here's my question. Just in case second hand key is a piece of junk, I wanted to be sure I could programme it before spending more money having the blade cut to match mine. Unfortunately, whenever I try the instructions for reprogramming, I get nada.

Could this be because I'm using my original master key, up until the point at which it says 'turn the ignition lock on/off once to add a new remote', and then switching to my replacement key to do the bit about holding the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds?

Do I need to get the blade cut to match my original key, and do all these steps with the replacement key?

I've only ever done it with a new key so I'm not 100% sure if reprogramming and old one works or not, can't see why not. This guide also says how to programme it to the immobiliser which you will need to do afterwards but the steps you are following for central locking/alarm are the same  l viewtopic.php?f=47&t=23563 l

You are supposed to do the steps with the replacement key. All of the innards are what it's looking for, so before getting the new key cut, put your new innards in the old key and perform the tasks with it like that. If it doesn't work then give up and swap innards back but at least you haven't paid to cut a new key... if it does work then rejoice, swap the innards back and get the new key cut.

I followed the instructions Stu has linked too, I didn't have much luck either until I found out about having to reset all old keys and linked it in my posting here...

Yeah, I'd found your posting StuC, and had just been trying it. Unfortunately, I've just realized I've been mixing up my clutch and my accelerator. (What can I say -- I've been driving an automatic for the last ten years. Also, I'm a dimwit!)

Presumably, that process would erase my original valet key as well? I guess as long as I can reprogramme it, it shouldn't be a problem...

As long as you dont do that whilst driving you'll be ok!  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

I have not tried it on a valet key as I dont have one. You can be the guinea pig if you like?  s;-) ;-) s;-)

OK, definitely making progress. I can now get the system into programme mode. Unfortunately, when I then try to programme my cheapo ebay remote, I get nothing.

Next step has to be your wiping of all previous remotes/keys, I suppose.

Good luck, as long as you don't erase all your old keys and end up with none working you'll be fine   s:mrgreen: :mrgreen: s:mrgreen:

What year is the car, i think pre facelift used a different fob. From what i can remember the internals from one fob where clear and the other black.
When i did ours (01 plate) bought a fob from a 2003, the immobiliser worked but would not re- program the alarm.
Bought another from a 2002 plate, this worked ok.
RACING, because football, cricket, rugby and golf only need ONE BALL

OK, I tried all manner of erasing patterns, but none of them made any difference. My main remote stopped working for a moment and wouldn't lock the car. But then I got back in and hit unlock, and that went back to normal.

My MR2 is a 2006 model.

I suspect you might be right, krazysteve. The internals on this one are black. I'll have to open up my good remote and check that one out,

When you say that's the actual key is it the 'actual' key because that's not from a UK MR2? That definitely doesn't have a Toy41 blade on it... looks more like you bought a toy43 bladed key.

Sorry, no, the second picture is the one that was the donor key for the transponder/controls stuff. I knew it wasn't from an MR2, but from what I could gather, there seems to be some crossover between Avensis, Celicas, RAV4s and MR2's of a certain age.

I'd read something that said as long as the donor key looks like your key, you should be fine. Clearly that was nonsense.

Incidentally, Stu/onion86 and StuC -- When I bought my car, I really wanted one in sable. I thought it was quite the nicest colour, and so when I saw the pictures of Stu's car, I was really quite envious.

And then I saw the paint job on StuC's...   s:mrgreen: :mrgreen: s:mrgreen:  

Being an impractical kind of a guy, I can see how owning this car could get pretty expensive, pretty damn quick.

I only had one black key when I bought my car.
So I bought a new blank key (TOY 41)from fleabay a while back, cost £3.60. Had it cut by local DIY store, cost £2.50.
Bought an old key from Dick2ski for £25 (other traders are available!) and transferred the guts to new key.
Programmed the immobiliser using these instructions:   m http://www.ehow.com/how_5054034_program ... p-key.html m  and it worked first time.
I could now start the car but alarm/central locking wouldn't work, so followed the first section of this  l viewtopic.php?f=47&t=23563 l  (thanks Les) and after about 3 or 4 attempts I now have a fully functioning spare key for £31.
A darn sight cheaper than Toyota.
2004 MR2 "Red" 57k miles. Bog standard except in it\'s past it has had the red leather interior replaced with red cloth!
