New MR2 with problems :(

Hi all,

I've just bought a 2000 MR2 which has a few problems.

1) The brake pedal pulses every time the brakes are applied regardless of light or heavy braking. I can only describe it as - it feels like the ABS is constantly working. It's got a receipt for new front disks and pads just under a year ago, could these have warped again already or is it the ABS constantly working? Is there a fuse I can remove from the ABS unit to test this theory?

This was just corroded rear discs - easily fixed. s:)

2) There wasn't much oil in the engine when I picked it up (around the 1/4 mark) so I topped it up with 5W30 when I got home just as Mr.T suggests. But now that I've topped it up I get the occasional smell of burning oil whilst driving. I'm just wondering if there is a common problem with oil consumption? I'll have to keep a close eye on levels for now.

Hasn't occured since. I'm now beginning to think that it wasn't the '2 at all. Probably just me being stupid s:oops: :oops: s:oops: Sorry if I've been a pain.

3) The headlight has a crack in the black inside part of the assembly. Is there a fix for this? Can it be plastic welded or is it a complete replacement job?

Since the car is a 2000, there is no warranty so I only need answers that don't involve warranty claims.

ref the oil consumption, I personally argue 5w30 is too thin.

do a search on oil and there is shedloads of discussion on why.

ref the burning oil smell, do a search for pre-cats, then check them ASAP, and IMHO remove them ASAP since yoru out of warranty.

What would replace the pre-cats? Is there a decat pipe that can be bought cheaply?

HAve you any idea on my braking issue?

not wishing to avoid your question but if you search it there is a description on how to decat your manifold. This costs nothing and essentially involves knocking out the catalyst material from teh precat chambers.

Under the front bonnet is a fuse panel, and inside this fuse panel is a green relay. Removing this relay should disable the ABS system.

BUT, weather the fault that the abs computer will detect due to the loss of this relay will be reset upon its replacement, I dont know... Done entirely at your own risk etc... If I had the workshop manuals with me I'd tell you for certain, but I dont s:? :? s:?

My brakes felt like this and it turned out to be some corrossion on the inside of the discs. The discs had previously been replaced and were under a year old so potentially you could have the same problem. My discs were skimmed by Toyota under warranty, I'm sure a garage could do the same for you.

Definitely the rust on the disks had this on the 2 and the focus.

It turns out that the brake problem is indeed the discs as you said. Its a bit suprising that they don't even last a year!

Can they be skimmed? If so, by how much?

Just need to solve the headlight problem now s:)

There have been a couple of headlights on e-bay recently. If you are looking for a replacement,well keep a lookout.

No problem for looking keeps me awake on nights!

No idea re price, sorry, probably expensive s:roll: :roll: s:roll: had both mine replaced under warranty before it ran out

Bad news... I had the front discs skimmed and it made no difference. s:(

s:( The garage said there was virtually no warping worth skimming too... I also took out the abs fuse under the bonnet and it made no difference either.

So I still have this pulsing in the brake pedal. The toe settings on the right rear wheel is still out but I can't see how this would affect the brake pedal feel. I doubt it would be the rear discs since they only handle about 30% of the braking force of the entire system.

I'm at a loss now... Any ideas?
