Not happy with painted calipers

There are several thread about how to paint them and what paint to use which I have read, so I went to Halford, bought the red caliper paint and did the NSF caliper with 3 coats. From a distance it looks brilliant but close up I'm not happy with the finish.

After each coat the "dimples" in the metal show through the paint, should I have sanded them down rather than just cleaning them?

This is exaxctly my bugbear with painted calipers, and as I've already mentioned with mine I used a metal file to eradicate the protective coating, and then used a wire disc which attaches to a drill end, to smooth it further.  Then applied a coat of laquer. As Kannjunkie mentioned though you are basically removing the protective coating that the manufacturer applies.

i painted mine on saturday, mine are perfectly smooth, i found that it ws best if i put a light coat on first, then left it to go tacky then applied a heavy second coat, not so heavy that the paint was dripping and runnin obviously but nearly as heavy as u could get it without it doing that and i've been left with a pretty smooth finish now its dry!
i used a wire brush and a wire brush attachement on the end of a drill to prepare mine, i'll post some pics if u guys want

How happy you are with the look is very much dependant on how much of a perfectionist you are. Unfortunately (or fortunately?!) i'm not one. My calipers, in all honesty, look complete sh**e. However, several people have commented on how good they look. Because you've done them yourself you're always gonna see all those little mistakes and c**p bits. I bet to the quick observer they look perfectly okay........

Whatever MRMike did, it did the trick nicely as i saw his yesterday and they looked like they had come out the factory like that!

Cheers Kris! I think the only way to get them smooth is to completely remove the protective coating, as i did with a metal file, and then a course circular brush attachment.  (Actually look quite good as bare metal)

Also I tried a few brush strokes but I wasn't happy with the brush marks, so had the paint put in Aerosol, then taped up the discs, plastic bushes and then sprayed the calipers.

Also I think a lot of it is to do with the Pauls (Coley's) paint which is absolutely great quality.  The last time I did calipers I used the same method but they came out nowhere near as good as they have this time!

just a note fore anyone thinking of doing their calipers in this fashion by removing the dimpled outer coating that there are products out there on the market that will allow you to reprotect the product at work we use one call Alochrome that is specifically used to chemically etch the metal before paint is applied

This is something Ive thought of doing for a while. The problem is Im not technical enough to take the wheels to bits and then paint them etc. Anyone know of somewhere in the North East that will paint my calipers for me? Are new ones expensive???

You only need to take the wheels off and then paint the calipers whilst they are exposed, thats what I did and they look ok. Just make sure that you get proper paint and some small brushes for the fiddly bits. Plenty available on the search forum button for painting the calipers........  just put "paint and calipers" in and you get 29 matches of happy reading of all you need to know.

just pretend you practise changing a flat tire  s:wink:  s:wink:  do it with every wheel and you are just ready for the day it really happens  s:P :P s:P  on the road  s:? :? s:?
use the time the wheels are off to ask you wife to paint the calipers for you (women are so much better than man at painting calipers  s:oops:  s:oops:  ).
by the way: you can use the jack (is it the right word?) to lift both wheels of the same side  s:idea:  s:idea:

Haha I got my girlfriend to paint my calipers for me!

much better at fiddly stuff.

I just stood there taking the wheels on and off, i can recommend getting some Axel stands, once you've changed a wheel 12 times you start to get sore.

Only had one jack, so decided to clean them all - one at a time,

then first coat, one at a time,

Then second coat, one at a time.

It was also absolutly roasting, hardest thing was trying to get the wheel back on with a freshly painted caliper, trying not to touch the paint with the wheel.

Looks good now though!

They look really good! So is it best getting axels and doing all 4 at the same time? Can anyone talk me through an idiots guide to the cleaning and painting? Also what paint/undercoat etc is best to use?  s:) :) s:)

tell me about it.took me two hours today to give them a proper goin over.
gonna put some pics of the whole car on later in the week, its really comin on now.
anyway back on topic.
i just sanded them down as i was having the same effect.really pleased with how they look now.i put a layer of laquer over the top after they had dried for 24 hours as the last time i painted them they started to chip off.
i still have 1/2 litre of paint so i can re-touch them up whenever i need to.
