hello, my name is jason, from new jersey in usa. I am thinking about purchasing a 2001 mr2 spyder. I recently owned a mercedes slk230 kompressor for the past 3 years, (just sold it last week). i have had nothing but majorly expesive problems with it (tranny = 5400, suspension = 2200 etc) time for a change

is there anything i should 1st know when making a switch from mercedes to toyota? will i like the car? will it be a let down?  how are the seats? is it enuff leg room? do the seats recline?

other than body kits , are there any "must do mods"  for this car?

i am not interested in performance and speed, i just want the car to look good and feel comfortable.

thanks

Jason

I think you're gonna like it though  s:) :) s:)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

by coincidence teh GF has teh SLK and I have the mr2.

so as I drive both regularly here is what you will notice.

1. The Merc is faster in a straigth line  by some margin.
2, The Merc makes a better long distance car.
3. The Mercs seats are a lot better

4. The merc handles like a barge compared to teh mr2.
5. The brakes while effective on rteh merc have zero feel. The mr2 has bucketloads
6. The worm gear steering on the merc is vague and has no feel. The mr2 has loads of feedback and is very direct and superb in use.
7. The Merc has loads more storage
8. The mr2 is in a different class on back roads.
9. The roof on the mr2 while manual is 10 times fastre in operation than teh merc and will often save you getting soaked while trying to raise it.

I could go on, but if theres something specific just ask.

They are very different cars that excel at different things, I'm lucky to have teh use of both so I can pick and choose which suits teh task in hand better.

thanx,, im glad u know bothe the slk and the mr2

more questions?

i see all of these body kits and i really like that idea.. which one is the body kit of choice?  what is TRD? i see those initials all over the place..

do the body kits come pre painted or do u have to normally get them painted?

is there an automatic tranny? what exactly is teh sequential manual tranny?  does it give u the ability to relax and enjoy the road?

Most are already answered though, you should spend some time searching and reading old posts  s;) ;) s;)

Body kit of choice...everyone has their opinion, get the one you like most  s;) ;) s;)

TRD is Toyota Racing Development, which makes "factory aftermarket" parts.

"do the body kits come pre painted or do u have to normally get them painted?"

AFAIK, only the genuine Toyota bodykits come prepainted (known as TRD Stage1 and Stage2 in US...and here as well I guess). The rest you have to paint.

"is there an automatic tranny? what exactly is the sequential manual tranny?  does it give u the ability to relax and enjoy the road?"

No automatic. SMT is a normal manual without clutch pedal, where computer handles the clutch. You have to change yourself though, through the shifter or button on the steering wheel.
