Parts needed for fitting aftermarket speakers

Hi all, would of thought there was a thread on this, maybe there is?

What parts would I need to fit my speakers. I have Edge ED306 if that helps

If I use this adaptor all I need to do is connect that to the wiring from head unit, and then simply push in the cable supplied with the speakers into that adaptor plus the speaker and the tweeter? Can't be that simple?

The OEM speaker is a one piece speaker and fitting.
Looking at your first link, as long as you speaker fits in the centre hole, the bolt holes look as though they are in the correct spacings to bolt the assembly to the door.
You can make your own out of MDF, there is a template in the how-to section, or you can massacre the OEM speaker to get the fitting.

One think you will have to be careful with, is that the tweeters are wired from the OEM fitting. If your speaker comes with tweeters they probably also have a little box (forgot its name) to do it. If it doesn't you'll have to work something out.

In guess the second link item is to avoid you having to cut the wires and putting your own spade connectors on. Your choice.

Firstly those speaker mounts you found on ebay are the wrong size, you need 6.5" ones, not 5.25"

I would rip off the old OE speakers from their mount and cut the magnet out with a hacksaw and use the OE mounts, you obviously wouldn't be able to put them back in if you wanted to return the thing to stock but would you really want to go to the hassle of pulling the door apart all over again for the sake of a set of £25 speakers?
That being the case I wouldn't bother with those plugs either, just buy some standard spade connectors that will fit to the connections that are already on the edge speakers, snip off the toyota plugs and attached those instead?

Your speakers aren't true component ones, like the OE toyota ones they don't use a crossover (thats the little box roger  s;) s;)  ) to filter out high frequencies to the woofer - to let it concentrate on bass and mid, with the high frquencies going to the tweeter. These speakers use a single small capacitor wired inline between the woofer and tweeter to filter out the bass for the tweeter. They're better than the OE ones though and alright for £25.

Also buy some roof flashing from Wickes (other diy stores are available) its great for sound deadening the doors and makes a lot of difference.

Ok so for £25 I agree with you both I should probably just leave them in when I sell the car so in that case I will cut the OEM speaker cable off and through crimp onto my new ones. I Just have two cable ends Roger there's no spade connections on my Edge speakers

If I can use the old OEM mount then great I'll massacre the old speaker and use that. I can screw my four new speaker holes onto that mount I take it???

My speakers apparently have the crossover built in, according to amazon statement; Please Note: All The New Stock Now Comes with Built-In Crossovers and Separate Crossovers are No Longer Required and Supplied by Edge Audio in the box. The old Edge ED306 speakers had a crossover as advertised by Halfords. Wether the old speakers actually produce better sound than the newly manufactured ones is a possibility. If Edge are just trying to save money by not supplying crossovers I don't know

Yeah thats not strictly true, it is a inline capacitor rather than a crossover. I checked the wiring diagram on Edge website and the tweeter just spurs off, if you had a crossover then the wires from the stereo would go to the crossover first and then out from there to the mid/bass and tweeter.
Yeah just gut the speaker until all you have is the outer ring and screw your new speakers straight to it.

All fitted, made a bit of a meal of massacring one of the old speakers, so had problems trying to mount it without the screws coming through to the other side of the makeshift mount. After the mistake the second one was perfect. Not too bad for an amateur

I'm confused about the conflicting reports of the auto leads mount.  m http://productfinder.autoleads.co.uk/pr ... &pID=20006 m  says it fits, others say not. Any help?

What do you guys think of this? I have the flashing ready!

Do you anticipate me needing anything else, such as speaker cable adapters etc?

Quick question, when you say "roof flashing" do you mean roof flashing tape?
Surely roof flashing is lead isn't it?

That's what I've got ready. I'm guessing it's some kind of high density rubber.

id never thought about this flashing but used it after reading about it on here last summer, in the end i used about 4 x 10metre rolls, does work good and cheap as chips! although keep it away from the seats i sat on some and ended up having replace the seats!

another point depending how your mouting speakers i went from mdf screwed on to fibreglassing the rings on and it made a big difference.

i didnt use the original speaker adaptors, the speakers were a few mm too big for them. i went for mdf rings in the end were painted then soundproofed round the outer edges, did 12mm for a few months then changed to 18mm then fibreglassed them so more sturdy.

If it helps, first off I purchased some Autoleads adapters(CT25TY02) which fitted in all ways until I refitted the door card to find they were too tall and the speaker was touching the inside face and sounded awful.  In the end I went for MDF rings ( m http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... OC:GB:3160 m ) and cut them to shape (210x145x12), took the forum advice and painted them to keep them waterproof.
I would also recommend some splash guards, they are cheap but effective.  You need to cut about 10mm from depth or they will clash with the window glass when you open it.  these are the ones I went with:  m http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B ... UTF8&psc=1 m .
Overall the door speakers seem unable to deliver anything spectacular so I fitted an amp in the cubby and one of Nathan's under dash subs - now it rocks.  Last I heard he still had a couple left but won't make any more so you may need to be quick.
When I get chance I will post the photos of my install, scared my wide to death when she came out to find a bare inner shell  :-) :-) :-)

For the 5" speakers? Well that's ok. I've got MDF, I've got a jigsaw and I've got some acoustic carpet somewhere too. £40 for Vibe Slick 5 from halfrauds, seemed like a reasonable deal.

All speakers have crossovers, not all have them in a little box! Often are just glued to the speaker.
Don't worry to much about it - if you have a separate box, you need to secure it to the door somehow, if you don't have the box, its all handled internally so nothing to worry about.

OT but some people believe a big "off-board" passive crossover makes for great sound quality, even on a £50 speaker. I've owned £600 Hifi speakers with fairly simpler crossovers and they sound great, so I think it's partly something the Manufacturers do to make you think you're buying something of fantastic quality.
Obviously if you've bought some Focal Utopias for £3000 then yes you'll need the fancy crossover box and nice new speaker wire:
