belt tensioner

Hi guys I suspect my belt tensioner is on its way out from what I have read and heard about them. Got a ratterling noise only on idle when warm noise disappears at slightest rev, and not there at all when engine cold. What is the best rout to go down can it be fixed or is it a new tensioner job.
