I did think frootloops had a good idea, my only thing would be you are putting yourself in the same position with the engine going bang. You would be extremely unlucky, but from the way it's gone, it could be very possible.

Definitely compare the price of rebuilt to price of doner car-bits sold.

I ended up with a bad 2ZZ engine as well so they are out there. I had to take it on the chin even though I found it was a pile of junk before even getting it in a car. It is hugely frustrating and costly.

I know your pain I did a 2zz change in my car after doing a fair few for others about 3 days later just hitting lift the cam chain snapped. Gutted wasn't the word for it the car stayed where it broke for about 2 weeks till I calmed down then got it recovered to my mothers where it still is parked on her drive. However I've decided to drop the engine and box out and put a really strong 1zz back in while I rebuild the engine I have got hold of a good 2zz head that was cheaper than buying a set of valves. If I were you I would get the crank ground and put it back in the car. If you do start thinking of a full rebuild you will need new liners and pistons that will start costing

Unfortunately, if I read correctly, the crank has already had a regrind, so a new or good condition used crankshaft is going to be needed one way or another. Keep at it, the effort will be worth it.
Ex 2GR-FE roadster. Sold it. Idiot.  Now Jaguar F-Type P450 75 Edition RWD. Officially over by the bins.

Yes the crank has All ready been ground to 0.5  that crank will not be used again  .   And the Conrod will not be used again . Just waiting for Toyota to give the price of all the bits

As Patrick says it has been ground before and we suspect if we had it done to max 0.75 it would probably spin the same one again in the future... Plus the cost of a regrind isn't far off an unmolested crank.

I know how you feel. It's probably lucky Patrick has my car or it'd have some extra dents  s:( :( s:(

Sickener isn't it

Gutted for you mate. It's a risk we all run. That's why I bought a whole car - Having thrashed the ever loving  sshit shit sshit  out of it for a thousand miles and up the drag strip, I at least know it should work when it goes into the MR2. After that, all bets are off.

You will fix it. The car will run again, as you want it to. Don't lose heart. It's just metal. Just bits. Just big Lego. You can rebuild it stronger.

Not worth losing sleep or being miserable over. Just find the best way forwards and do it.

Wise words from Mr J Cool
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Quote from: "Meeerrrk"Patrick has offered to put another engine in the car if I source one, so I wouldn't need to do it myself.

It's a good idea but my worry is that I buy another lemon  s:( :( s:(

I have just read through the last few pages, very sorry to hear about your nightmare.

Would an option be to get Patrick to fit a cheap donor car engine and you make the rebuild a longer term project as funds allow? Then you will eventually get the reliability and knowledge it has all been rebuilt.

When you have the old engine rebuilt you could then sell a tried and working engine (hopefully) that you had been using. At least if you drive the donor car you may have confidence in it?

Good luck with whichever route you take.

I'm struggling to find a way to afford doing one or the other, so doing both is out of the question, unfortunately.

terrible news mate,on a very slight brightside at least you can buy a reasonably new low mile 2zz engine to replace it with as you have all the older parts there to convert it back to cable throttle etc,i could keep an eye out for a decent candidate for you

I'm struggling to find anything suitable at the moment so if you have links, means, or ways then I'd be interested to hear...thanks very much for the offer

you could quite possibly get away with a crank a set of mains and big end bearings on that, hopefully not too much has made it through your strainer to your new oil pump,if you didnt run it too long it should be ok,i do have access to some salvage sites vvtli's do come up pretty regular but there are none on right now.if i see anything i will let you know

Mmmmm I beg to differ but not actually being there it might be different in the flesh, that spun one looks nasty, think it needs more than just a new shell   s:( :( s:(

the silver "metallic" mesh is all inside your engine, in block, in oil sqirters, in head, in rockers, in rocker shafts, in camshafts... I've seen numerous engines after bearing failure that fail again after 1000km... The only way to make sure it won't happen again is to clean all engine parts. You would be surprised how much of that metallic mesh can be inside camshafts, I have some pictures of cleaning them on an engine with bad bearing

#845
That could be the reason for the failure, as we know it has been rebuilt recently
