Reading the instructions, it looks like their pre-cat material is made of much more robust "stuff" than ours!

Seems that they're only doing it as a slight performance mod - if only we had the same material in there, I wouldn't have to worry about mine so much!

Hehe well on our cars it's because they can (in the opinion of people on these forums) contribute to premature engine failure.

The precats are ceramic and very close to the engine.  If bit of the precat get chipped off and sucked back into the engine it's game over.

There's a huuuuge thread on this in the maintenance section that's well worth a read.  Explains what to look out for ad how to gut them if you should choose to.

On the VX220 it's to help derestrict the flow of the exhaust gases and thus hopefully increase the cars performance.

a removal of any cat on a car will do nothing but help performance, as there are less restrictions for the exhaust gasses to flow through
