Key snapped in ignition

Hi folks, I have the key snapped off in the ignition - and it's just the tip, so there's no chance of extracting it with needlenose pliars. I can't see very well, but I suspect it's turned a little in the barrel - the rest of the key won't insert fully, and the spare key won't go in. Does anyone know what my options are? I'm being quoted a ridiculous amount for a recovery company to even look at it, and I've no confidence they'd be able to sort it out. Oh, it's a 2001 MR-S. I'm just going back out with a macro lens to see if I can get a photograph...

Super glue on the end try to glue the ends together it might be anuff to just pull it out what you got to loose

I think the tip may have turned, otherwise I should be able to insert the rest of the key and operate it as normal, so I don't think superglue will work (I'd try it if I had some in the house, though the break is sheared so I'd have a 50/50 chance of matching the ends).

I've found  m http://www.justanswer.com/toyota/5sgc5- ... y-off.html m  which mentions drilling out a small round tab under the barrel, but it's not clear from the dialogue what the actual purpose of the tab is, or what drilling it out would achieve - maybe removal of the barrel innards?

I think I may just have to give up and get the local dealership out to it. My wallet has run and hid.

I've ordered a second-hand ignition assembly off ebay (£20), and when I get my drill back from a friend I loaned it to...

...it looks as though the pin on the underside holds the assembly in - if the key is in the ACC position the pin can be pushed in and the whole assembly removed, but if you can't get the key turned to ACC you can drill the pin out and remove the assembly that way.

I was going to say get the whole ignition lock assembly and lock kit. If you decide you want a lock kit I've got one with a key

It sounds like it works the same as the MK 2 ,there's a pin underneath that you push in ,then the barrel comes out
 (as you said the key has to be turned though ,so might not work for you )

ill have a look at my spare one tomorrow if you like ,see how it comes apart

Thanks for the info folks.

Unfortunately I've not managed to sort it out yet - I can't drill the pin out as it seems to be spinning with the bit, and I've not managed to punch it out with a hammer and punch. But, I'll get a bigger hammer tomorrow!

Progress! I've managed to remove the retaining pin, so I've extracted the key assembly. I've made quite a mess removing the pin - I had to drill out the barrel surrounding the pin in order to get it out.

Now I can insert a screwdriver in the bottom of the assembly, disengage the steering lock, and go through the motions of starting... but it won't start - there's nothing from the starter motor. Either the battery is too flat (it's currently on charge in the house), or the brassy coloured level along the top of the assembly has something to do with it.

I have a replacement lock waiting for me to pick up from work, but I'll have a go at fixing the old key assembly first...

Remember the chip in the key and the transponder need to be in close proximity if you have stripped it all apart then then it's possible the immobiliser is cuttin in? Without seeing what you've done it's hard to me to picture it

Battery was part flat. Sorted now. Replacement part was wrong (my mistake I think), but I've got the thing running now, phew. I'll summarise this coming weekend and take some photographs. Thanks for helping everyone =:-)
