Hi folks
New to this board - just picked up a 2002 MK3 roadster about 4 hours ago. It only has one key and it's a plain black one without remote locking. I understand you can buy programmable keys but they're not cheap. My question is: how and when does the alarm get activated if I've only got a manual key? Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere...

Hi,

So there are no buttons on the key?  My understanding is that Toyota issued light grey valet keys with no buttons (well that's what I got with my other Toyotas) that merely open and close doors at the lock and start the car but do not set the alarm, I don't think.  The valet key may have had to be replaced at some time so it is the black colour.  The normal key on a 2 has 2 buttons - open and close - but the close button has 3 different modes depending on whether you have your roof up or down and whether you want deadlocks on.

Hope someone who has replaced keys recently will be on soon and able to help you further.

Forgot there may be a difference with an MRS, is yours an MRS?

I've owned Toyotas before and had a grey valet key. However, this one is black and it has no buttons. It locks and unlocks both doors, starts the car and that's it.
It's a Roadster, standard UK model.

Got two black keys both with two buttons and one grey valet key.
That's what you get from new.
So you've got no remote locking?
At sometime someone must have lost all three keys?

So what are my options?  I think I can get a key sorted from here  m http://cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk/shop/mr2- ... aster-key/ m  if I have my VIN and registration. Is that the only way?

My valet key looks black but beside the button key its a dark grey shade......i always thought you needed a button "master key" to program another key to the car but i read some older posts were it has been done without......pm CTP on here (thats Chris from cheaptoyotaparts,same place as your link above)

Agree with Mark - you do need a master key with buttons to programme the open/close buttons on the new key. I did that just recently for a second spare master key (with buttons). But email CTP and see if he knows more

You could take a chance and buy a secondhand key and hope that in programming the second key your current key is set to master.
It least if you go to CTP for a replacement you know it will work. Plenty of happy customers on here using that method.

I suppose though... if you did get a secondhand one and it didn't work, you could always use it as a spare if you ended up buying a new one too.

Gihe - sorry I was wrong. On re-reading the key programming instructions, you do not need a master key with lock/unlock buttons. Your new key must have the lock/unlock buttons. Hope that helps. So you could buy a CTP master key and know it will accept the programming; or chance another cheaper key that may or may not work

I can confirm that I too only got a black no button key when I got my car, I contacted CTP, sent him my reg and VIN and he sent to me a new precut 2 button key and the instructions to program it.

I then used the no button master key I had to program the new 2 button key to the ignition barrel, you then program the car to recognise the remote buttons as a different step in the process.

It all worked like a charm and I now have a 2 button remote key and a black no button spare!

Sorted a second spare 2 button key today.......£30 for the inners and Toy41 blank,£4 to get the key cut,all paired up and working well,happy with that.  s:D :D s:D

An update from CTP. My key is definitely a valet key as it does not lock the glove box. Even though it looks black, it's actually a very dark grey.
So I'm screwed.

If it starts the car you should be ok for coding a new button key (theres 2 sets of instructions,one for the immobiliser/chip..the other for the buttons/locking/alarm)......phils99 a couple of posts above was in the same situation.....he was able to program a new button key from a valet key (which is simple btw)

Your new key from CTP will come pre cut with instructions ready to set up......takes 5 mins.

I went down the second hand route for a second button key which worked ok for me but tbh i think i would buy new next time.Theres always a chance a second hand key may not work at all.

pm phils99 and check with him as his had no buttons so i guess it was only a valet key he had ?

I'm only guessing here but i think an an auto locksmith should be able to add a key via a OBD key coding scanner machine gadget  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:  without the need for an original key......you should call one to check,they usually charge around 30 quid.....you will need a button key cut and ready to pair up.

just to confirm..

I have 2 MR2's the first one came with 1 BLACK no button key, this one, CTP sent me a precut 2 button key and I reprogrammed it with no problem

My second MR2 only had the GREY valet key, YOU CANNOT REPROGRAM ANY KEYS USING THIS. To fix this I went on ebay and bought a set comprising of:
1 x 2 button key,
1 x steering column and ignition switch (as the switch is difficult to remove so I recommend get the full column, easy to fit)
1 x glovebox lock
1 x floor lock (for petrol and engine lid release)
1 x ECU
2 x door handle locks

The only thing I didnt get is the locks for the rear boxes, but im not too bothered as I dont leave stuff in the car anyway.

The install took about 3 hours as you need to replace the ECU (found behind the passenger seat under the rear box), this is a different ECU to the engine one and should just work with the 2 button key when installed (mine did!)

I got all the above for under £100, cheaper than a replacement key!

Does the Key Blade come out of the fob? i can't see how it would?

Also i have one 2 button key and a grey key.  

The question is, can i buy a second hand key and use fob on my car.  Can i also transfer the blade as my fob is a bit worn

The key blade does not come out it's part of the case you need to buy a new blank key to yse with your inner.

If you have a second hand one with the correct inner you have another potential full spare.
Just needs to be paired to the car.

i can reset your ecu to virgin state so when you put the key in ignation it will program one as master , then it will take 2 other keys . or i can send you a chip that you will have to de solder and solder this one in its place that is for 2zz and 1zz ecu  s:) :) s:)
