I had this with an Impreza which was infact the radio. In the manual for the MR2 radio it says press Sound and 6 at the same time to switch off warning.Doesn't work.Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I did'nt think the key in bong had anything to do with the radio.........  most, just disable the sounder behind the instruments or just stick a bit of tape over it to reduce the volume.
Perhaps what the handbook is refering to, is enabling / disabling tones when buttons are pressed purely for the radio ??

Yes I'm sure your correct that the radio is not involved. The radio in the Impreza I mentioned had a removable front and the chime was to remind you to take it off.
