When I press the key button the door lock but I don't know whether the immob/alarm works. If I put my hand in the car when it's armed nothing happens but I don't know whether it has any sort of intrusion sensor. I'm guessing it's impossible to test the immobiliser without trying to Hotwire it

Firstly (just in case you weren't aware) the alarm does take 30 seconds or so to arm so won't work instantly as soon as you lock the car.
There are pressure sensor type pressure switches in the frunk/engine bay which should be visible if you check for them. If the microwave sensor isn't working try locking the car with the engine lid ajar then open it to see if the alarm goes off. There is an adjustor under the right hand bin behind the seats to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor.

Lock with the key lock button......open manually with the key in the lock and open the door,it should go off...press unlock on the key to stop it.

For the internal protection, mine would sometimes go off when washing the hood or even cleaning the glass.......but what does work is with the hood down set a carrier bag or jacket in without opening the doors, happened to me the other week, tried it again by just putting my arm in and it didnt go off......again just press unlock to turn it off.

You could take the inners out of the key to test the immobiliser.....it wont start as it wont pick up the transponder.

Never knew that, does the bin need to be removed to get at it?

Ah right, obviously something not working then because I put a grocery bag in the passenger side today and nothing happened. There are 2 flashing LEDs, one next to the coin holder and one under the central heater dial. They both illuminate. Is the interior sensor the black box under the back edge of the centre console where the rear bins are

Try the doors first.....lock with the fob.......open with the key, then open the door.

Is the alarm unit still in the frunk under the spare wheel?

The alarms are so random. I accidentally hit my car with the regulator for a gas BBQ - lifting it over the car to get it out the garage! Alarm didn't go off.

Later on, I Placed my drying towel on the windscreen while drying off the 350z, and set the  alarm off!!

When you say it doesn't go off, do you mean just the audio, or the audio and the hazards do nothing? I ask as the audio never went on mine, looks like the previous owner just unplugged the audio unit, might be worth a check. It's in the frunk, under the spare wheel.

There's also 3 settings for the alarm:

One push of the lock button sets the alarm
Two pushes of the lock button sets the deadlocks, and
Three pushes of the lock button sets the systems for when the car is parked with the roof down.
