I guess "These felt pads" are more than felt pads but heat deflectors protecting the topside paint of your engine cover!!

I also read some where that in the event of an engine fire the plastic lugs melt first and the pads fall onto the engine stiffling the fire and blocking oxygen. How true that is I don't know but it's certainly plausible.

Took mine off last year because they had started to deteriorate & no adverse effects, can't say I noticed any change in sound and paint is all still fine.

Can you buy replacements as the tapered ends on mine have deteriorated ?

You can indeed, I've got some which I'll fit when I come to fit my engine grill mesh.
Part numbers 53341B & 53342B. When I bought mine they were £21.00 & £51.00 from CTP.

Had mine off for the past 4/5 years.

No manifold heat shield either and absolutely no ill effects whatsoever and it used to be a daily drive of 100 miles up and down the motorway !

sorry to hijack thread, but if you take the front plastic trim off with ps pump etc under, i take mine off regularly to polish everything underneath, are the plastic poppers designed to be reused they are a bit flimsy with regular removal not sure whether ditch the plastic altogether
