It's my first post so greetings everyone.
A bit of background. Just recently brought the car (a '00 5-speed SMT)back from Japan and since Toyota Malaysia do not recognise this car as their official product here, they refuse to service and referred me to outside workshop. As the '2 is quite rare I'm not sure the level of knowhow of these garages, but found one anyway but yet to send my car.

Anyway, just few questions to back my own kowledge before I go there:
1. When should we change the SMT fluid? Can't understand the Japs in the owner's manual.
2. Choices for SMT fluid? (other than Mr' T's and the Redline...)
3. Any info where can I get an English-version owner's manual and complete workshop manual?

Been reading the SMT problems posts and getting scared coz as an import, no warranty whatsoever but so far everything is good.

Thanks,

Lynn J

Buying/selling area on any MR2 board?

eBay?
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Try sending a PM to member crankshaft; Singapore doesn't officially recognise the '2 either but he should be able to give you some pointers since he's down that way.

Toyota's SMT fluid is *really* expensive, but not knowing the compound I wouldn't like to recommend anything else.

As far as changing it goes, the only way to fully depressurize the system is to cut a whole in the pressure reservoir! Member GSB would know how hydroscopic the stuff is, but I don't think a change is necessary.

Thanks for the info. Good to know there's someone who knows a '2 within 400km radius from me.
Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong on the SMT. Barring any mishap, the gearbox is sealed for life, is it?
Hmm, now that made sense coz when I sent it one last time in Japan for servicing, the guy didn't want to change the fluid. Well, I thought it's like normal ATF where you changed the fluid every now and then.... plus I could make a word out of what the Jap guy said then....

There's a few '2s dotted around KL, not that that helps.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Don't confuse the SMT mechanism with the gearbox itself. Gearbox oil is still changed as per schedule. The SMT hydraulic fluid does have a reservoir that can be topped up, though in practise this only needs to be done during the refit of a clutch.

Lynn J - Apa Kabar?

Yep, I'm only 400 km away, but unfortunately my '2' is 10,000km away in Taunton, Somerset, England  :-) :-) :-)

I believe that ther's another member in Singapore. I recall seeing his post when peiople were talking about how much their 2 cost them (nothing beats Singapore Car prices !!), but I just did a search and could not find the thread.

I'll help whereever I can !

crankshaft - khabar baik.

Nice to meet/ read you. Pretty sure you gonna get my PM sooner or later. Turns out there's more to know about the '2 than I had imagined (e.g the gearbox thingy... when I said I'm a newbie, I really meaned NEWBIE).

So the gearbox is pretty similar to any other gearbox (manual?), but the SMT is a separate unit just acting as the shifter, rite? And the gearbox oil should be changed at regular intervals but never ever touch the SMT (well, at least for me) unless you're doing something with the clutch.

Guys, great help. Thanks a bunch.

Now I'm ready for the garage....
