Hi, I'm hoping that someone will be able to help with a question about sleeving a 2zz engine.

We have a customer in with an Mr2 fitted with a 2zz engine. It's gone pop, run low on oil and now he's fitting a stroker kit. We are considering sleeving the engine and I've seen a few places sell the Darton sleeves but I was wondering who can be trusted to fit them?

Thanks

The Celica gen 7 also used the 2zz engine - posting on Celica Club UK is likely to draw a response.

If the bores are worn on the 2zz then you will have to sleeve it rather than rebore it. If you have a look or ask on spyderchat they might help as the yanks do mad things with mr2's, while your doing the engine if its got the standard sump on it I'd think about changing it as the 2zz hasn't got any baffles in. I take it you realise that the rings are different rings for the cast sleeves.

Thanks for the info. From what I gather( I'm an office monkey not an engine builder), the stroker kit came with Mahle pistons but with the supplied rings the clearances are too high.

We're trying to get rings sorted but it's taking time. We're looking into sleeving as a backup.

Be very careful if you plan to hone or overbore a 2ZZ engine. Basically you can't do it.

This is due to the fact that the engines come from the factory with a MMC (metal matrix composite) coating on the cylinder faces. Honing/boring removes that.

There's an interesting thread here:  m http://www.mr2.com/forums/threads/91200 ... lity-Build m

If I was having to replace my engine, I would but a brand new short block ( m http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/produ ... cts_id=977 m ) but I'd buy it over here from Toyota to keep shipping costs down.

Just as an update, the engine is now up and running. The block was bored and the sleeves fitted by a local specialist. seems to be running well.
