Turbo-ing. How do they do that?

Just curious about what is involved in the 1ZZ turbo conversion? Being an NA engine surely the compression ratio is too high for forced induction. So what is done??

To the compression ratio?  Nowt as far as i am aware.
Decent power is obtainable without modification of the internals.
I suppose it's just less efficient.

Converted NA cars run a lot less boost than a normal turbo car in order to avoid detonation due to the high comp ratio.

And less ignition advance.

Oh really! Thought some kind of head gasket magicery may have been involved. But then The capacity would be changed...

I keep dreaming about a set of low comp pistons and tougher connecting rods for mine.

Capacity doesn't change- it's 'swept volume' that's quoted, which isn't affected by head gasket trickery

Thats interesting.

But spacing the head would affect compression ratio. Which would help/make it easier, and has probably been done before, but I don't know it's been done, just guessing.

the only reason to lower the compression ratio is to raise the boost, and since as is it can make enough power to snap the rods and mince the gearbox its fairly pointless

head gasket thickness increase is normally max at about half a ratio, so as mark put it pointless for the money
