Rear storage bin install options

Hi All

I have trawled through the various threads posted on here but I am still unsure which way to proceed.

I want to install a 10" Pioneer slim sub and a pair of 6.5 inch components into the rear storage area. The Pioneer sub because I have one which cost me a lot of money and the matching amp from a previous car which has sat unused for a couple of years. The components so I can experiment with tweeter placement to maximise the SQ.

I have a 4 channel amp and pair of Focals (decided to replace the Vibe black airs I purchased a week ago) comming for the doors and to also power the rear speakers.

I have seen a thread where the storage doors were removed and fixed to a piece of MDF with the speakers then fitted. I can't help but think the plastic would be too weak to adequately support the weight of the MDF, sub and component speakers. I am also convinced the plastic surrounds etc would rattle along with the music.

Has anyone removed all of the plastic gubbins (inside and out) from the rear storage area and fitted a MDF box in the space? I wonder if suitably damped etc and screwed to the body if this would offer a decent solution. If anyone has done this I would really appreciate the measurements.

There is a bit of fabric hanging down inside my storage area, is it OK to either remove this or fix it to the tray above?

Another option (and possibly much easier) would be to use thinner plywood attached to the storage bin doors with some sort of metal brace for additional support. Line the storage bin with 6mm closed cell sticky backed foam to fully damp it. The amp would be fitted to a piece of ply fitted to the storage area floor.

I know there is a risk of water entering the storage bins so I would be extra careful with keeping the drains clean and extra vigilant checking for water ingress.

Any assistance, ideas, experience or useful info would be greatly appreciated.

Or make a sub box to fit. I even had that exact setup, but whilst making it in fibreglass the kisses wanted me to make space in the back for storage.

It was your thread that gave me the idea. How did you fix the mdf to the backs of the storage bin doors? Did you add any new fixings to add strength or use stock?
Did you have to do anything to stop that area rattling?

Love the photo of your dad holding up the speaker panel!!!

Haha yeah he's a nutcase for sure!
Full tube of pink grip used to stick the MDF with nothing extra!
I'm still to get it working as dark nights came in quick so no tests done as yet,next few weeks tho for sure!

Thanks Ronnie, will look up that pink grip. DJ that looks really good, at almost 6ft 4 I have to have my seat all the way back so will have to have my install flush to the rear panel. Was that fashioned using fibreglass or some sort of filler?

To be honest it only sticks out maybe a cm more than the speakers sit when they are flush. Just made from rings of mdf and then fiberglass ed over the top. Pretty easy to do  s:) s:)

Just finished installing the passenger door speaker - focal PS165. Sounds much better than stock and the Vibe black airs I installed last week. I forgot to refit the plastic sheet which is obviously needed to protect the electrical components from water, aaaarrrrgggghhhh. I was considering using dynamat to close all of the gaps in the door skin so now I need to put back the plastic sheet I will do this tomorrow. Hoping it proves worthwhile and from what I have read elsewhere covering all the holes/gaps makes quite a difference.


From what I have heard already I am not sure I will need the amp but it's on its way so will get fitted. Going to make a start planning the rear storage area install tomorrow. I am not after anything too loud or bassy just want a nice clear balanced sound.
