Why is the front, silver/grey strip in 2 parts?

I thought this was just a broken piece on my old car, but after checking out a few other pictures, it seems to be the norm.

Why does this strip came in 2 parts?

I think it looks a bit naff as the join isn't great.

Has anyone done anything to join this or make it look less 'broken'?

Easier to spot the rear one on the pfl's in fairness.

@Hfb, better that you know now, before you need it. On my old toldedo I had broken down and couldn't find it. I ended up ripping at all different parts of the bumper grilles to find it, whilst using my most advanced swear words. That wasn't my finest moment.
