HI all,

I only have the one key for my Mr2 and the body has broken on it, the key still works just the plastic body is snapped.

I'm after a new key blank which I can get cut to my old one and swap the internals over too. I purchased one from Ebay (Chinese key) only to be told when I took it to the key cutters it was the wrong one it wouldn't even fit the barrel! . I called Toyota and they wanted £90 for a new one?!

Has anyone got a link to a tried and tested aftermarket key they have orderd that works? As don't really want to hold £90 over for a key blank.

Car is a UK 2001 model.

Cheers   s:D :D s:D

Timpsons do replacement keys and cases for £25. You just pop in your innards. So to speak.

I believe that others have had more success buying eBay copies and having them cut locally.

The remote is a separate unit inside the key body, you just unscrew and pop it in the replacement.

Check out ebay, 'autoguy-uk' can supply 'Toy 41' key blanks which are the blank key blade in the handle. If you supply him a clear image of your key blade, he'll cut it to code so that you just put your transponder unit into the new key and off you go. It's £12 for a new key. May as well get 2 and code a new fob whilst your'e at it, so you have a spare.

I went into Timpsons yesterday and they supplied and cut a key blade with the correct plastic for £9.95. All I had to do was swap the electronics from the broken key. Bargain! Very pleased indeed (and relieved at how cheap Toyota keys are).

Maybe it's a franchise and they set their own prices? I was pleasantly surprised at the price.

Really simple to get a new body cut- just be careful you buy something that's decent quality body otherwise the key cut can be a bit shoddy

My local Timpsons (kingsway, Derby) said they wouldn't cut my blank key that i got on ebay.. Will have to find another place..

Also, does anyone know what transponder we need for our keys?

Perhaps a bit late for the OP but possibly of use to others, I got a replacement key from these guys: http://www.carkeyhelp.co.uk/categories/Toyota/MR2/

Sent them a photo of the original key and they cut and posted it out, and as explained above just swapped out the original internals. It was £13.55 after delivery.

I can top that.  Mine wanted £50 to cut the £7 key I bought from eBay!  The guy said it was an insurance issue, as they were not their keys?  Got it cut at a local indipendant for £10. Works perfectly, and soooo much cheaper than going to Toyota.

HI I've tried the links on this thread and tried to find Autoguy on ebay but no luck does anyone have a link to either Autoguy or another service that can cut a key for an MR2 at a reasonable price as one of my keys cases has broken but the transponder is fine.

Bought a key from Ebay  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251004617083? ... EBIDX%3AIT m  which cost about £4 with postage, this is a blank of course took it to get cut that cost £5 local independent shop in town, tranferred all the electrical internals from the old broken key and it works great £9 in total. I put new batteries in both keys as well as they were nearly 10 year old so hopefully thats ok for another 10 years   s:D :D s:D  Thanks for help and advice, the new key seems to be very good quality the only downside is it doesn't have the Toyota Logo on the back but not really an issue.

Update I have found that the key cut fits  the ignition, doors and fuel/bonnet lock perfectly except it doesn't work on the rear storage locks or the glove box. I've worked out why its because I used the non remote master key to get my replacement cut and they are slightly different from the remote keys. Now actually its a bit annoying because to rectify I have go through the whole process and cost again if I want both remote keys to unlock the glove box and storage. On the plus side if i'm taking my car to the garage for repairs I can lock everything in the rear storage for safe keeping without taking it out of the car as I normally do and leave them with the remote key that doesn't open the glove box or rear storage but does everything else. Either way my main reason for writing this is just to give a heads up to anyone else getting a key re-cut, don't use the non remote master key as I did, use the remote key if you can.  In theory now if I lose the last original remote key I wont be able to lock or unlock the glove box at all except I kept the original blade from the other remote so if needed I can still get a replacement cut, but tbh I think i'm a bit of a Wally for not checking it out in the first place but I never imagined a key that fits the door and ignition wouldn't work everywhere like the remote keys.  s:oops:  s:oops:

Hi thanks for the key really appreciate it, It arrived late because postage hadn't quite covered it and I had to go to the sorting office to collect, this is because they now charge on width of a letter rather than weight which has generated loads of extra revenue for the post office although they said it wouldn't !!! but not a problem.  Thanks again   s:D :D s:D
