Shift lights - Your advice, please.

I've found this:

Do you know about any others? I don't need all of the functions this one has, just something to light up sequentialy from about 5K to 6,5K RPM and then blink. I'm planning on participating on another drag racing event next year...
(I guess I should stop posting at 2:30 AM... The image of drag-queens racing keeps poping whenever I mention drag-racing! s:? :? s:? )

Or you could buy something that has programmable shift lights, plus prog. lateral G (cornering) lights, plus much more significant things for basically the same money. http://www.gtechpro.com Unless you drive a Scion, then you might want the pretty blue lights instead.

BaTMail ChrisWilson on the BookaTrack site and see if he still does the ones that plug into the fag lighter socket. I got my set from him years back and they were about £50. They maybe more now. They worked perfectly on every car I've ever put them in (including a diesel!). They currently live in my Westie and are clearly visible even in bright sunlight. Requires no wiring.

They have a little LED pod that sits on your dash and a control box that you stash somewhere else. It works by reading pulses from your 12v cig lighter line. There are three dials on the control box, one controls the brightness of the LED's and the other two are to set when the lights come on.

The left one controls the left light the right the right one. The two in between come on sequentially depending on which dial is set the highest. I have the left dial on the Westie set to about 6300rpm and the right to 6800rpm. They are very useful. Also, as they work on the voltage, they can highlight when the electrical system isn't right. For exaple, I've had them stop working and it's always acted as prior warning to an electrical fault (usually with the alternator). A nice accidental feature.

Set up isn't fun (you need to rev the engine to the revs you want the lights on and adjust accordingly) but you only have to do it once.

That product is $289 and a G-Tech is either $199 or $299 depending on model, both have shift lights and cornering lights. The RR model ($100 more) has PC software and download cable.

Great gadget, even before they added the capability to save and plot lateral Gs. That reminds me, I need to work on my dead reckoning program some more. I wish there was a cheap digital compass (compensated) with some sort of PC interface. The cheapest I've found was about $600.

GTECH is a bargain if only used for the shift lights alone, I don't look at the rev counter anymore, and having the lights 'stage' is really useful.

There have been about 15 downloads of the programs and I got one complaint. A guy somewhere in Europe I guess (native language French) had trouble with the DR program because of the way we represent real numbers (digits . digits) vs the way they are on his computer set for the French language (digits , digits). No fair using commas! The G-Tech PASS software exported to a .tab file format (with tab delimiters instead of commas... over here PASS exports to a .csv Comma Separated Values file format) and I changed my program to handle that, but havn't got around to handling the European way of representing numbers.

That is the one Kerrie has. It came with one of the cars I bought. It is good but I have the Gtech in mine which is a clear winner.

Look up Pivot they sell lots of shift light kits in Japan!

That's the puppy. It does what it says on the tin. I've been using it on the Westfield for about 2 years now and other than passengers occasionally knocking the dials (the control box is under the dash on the passenger side) and having to reset it all back up, it's been perfect.

Decent price as well.

Depends what you want. If you want something to tell you when to change gear I can't really see how one set of lights can be better than another. If you want other features like data logging and whatnot then fairy nuff.

I installed the GtechPro RR and I'm satisfied.

I did some runs with the stock ECu and then with PFC.

I know I cannot expect accurate dynos, but at least I get an idea for "before" and "after" the PFC installation!

Has anybody used the permanent mount? Where did you install it?

Yes, I did. It's right on the little door in the middle of the dash. I figure if I ever sell the car and the new owner doesn't want it, that door can be replaced. The reason for doing it was the suction cup mount would fall off in the intense Florida Summer heat.
