Can anyone tell me how to unplug a facelift steering wheel airbag. It doesn't have a join in the wire between the air bag and the plastic housing behind the wheel so needs to unplug from one end or the other, I'm a bit stuck.....

There's a plug-in socket attached to the back of the airbag.

Thanks I tried to get that out but couldn't work out how, does the whole thing come out or do you release part of the plastic out of the rest?

Are there some clips, tabs etc on the socket to release?

Thanks

They are a bit fiddly as they get a bit stiff with age.  The release clip is part of the of the plug.  I just took a peek at a spare airbag I've got and it looks like and external release tab.  Keep fiddling -you'll get it.  You release the part of the plastic attached to the wire from the steering hub.

Thanks, I'll keep going, to be clear the whole of the plastic bit on the end of the wire comes out of the airbag? I'm not looking to separate any of the yellow/orange parts of the plastic plug, it all comes out together?

No the yellow plug comes apart.  The wiring splits at that plug/socket.

Ahh, that's quite a bit different to mine.

I have a plastic plug fitted into the centre of the air bag (where yours has the red and black wires coming out, but my connector is different to yours) and then a wire directly to the "squib?". There is no intermediate connector, like the one in your photo which is located to the right of the yellow circular sticker. I just have one connector in the centre of the yellow sticker and then one other connector wired into the "squib" with no connector at all in the length of the wire between the two....

I can only assume I need to get the connector located in the centre of airbag out, but I don't want to break it.

I think pre and post facelift are different???

Sorry - it was one I had and I didn't remember which car it came from.  I've done airbags on other cars where the central connector is just pulled off.  Hope someone who's done a facelift one can assist you.

Thanks, that is useful to know. I had sort of assumed it would unplug from the other end so I didn't spend much time examining the airbag connector. I have put it all back together for the moment, I'll try again soon.

Thanks again

I think loadswine did one in 2006 but not specific as to Fl or PFL.
Another source could be lexus /celica/corolla forums as the airbag is not unique to the Roadster   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:  .

Yes, thanks very much for that suggestion. I have looked up a generic Toyota airbag removal video, plus some pics of an MR2 airbag for sale, and I think I may have the answer. Hopefully I won't be wearing an airbag soon......!!

OK well that was amazingly easy. It took 10 minutes to swap the steering wheel and 5 minutes of that involved me trying to pull the steering wheel off before I had removed its retaining nut!!! So you can tell how experienced I am with the spanners.....

The airbag connection on the face lift is different from the pfl and unplugs directly out of the back of the airbag itself, you just lift up a retaining clip on the back of the plug itself, and then pull the plug out.

Then there was no need for a steering wheel puller because it easily came off the splines, so all in all it was super easy.

Thanks for the helpful comments.

"Super easy" huh?  You weren't saying that a week ago! Funny how things get like that after you've done them.  Well done, pleased it worked out. I may have to do something similar. The Toyota badge on my steering wheel has somehow got scratched by the previous owner. All I'd like to do is change that, but I suspect my only option is to replace the centre section?  I'm sure it must have been discussed in the forum elsewhere, but how does it come away from the wheel, and would I have to do the same airbag disconnect as you?

Yes it's amazing what a bit of trial and error can achieve, mostly error in my case!!

I'm not sure you need to remove the whole airbag to swap the badge but if you do I'm happy to provide any info I can that might help.

Can't you get stick on badges that go over the old one?

That would be a great option if such a thing existed?  Thanks for the offer of help.

Ian does badges its where i got my jdm midship badges from.
You either pull the existing badge off or if like me that was too much hard work stick it straight over the top.

My two Australian Facelift Spyders have the plug as pictured by Carolyn. My 2ZZ Corolla uses the plug you say your MR2 has. Might have been an update after 2004?
