Rear trailing arm bush

I'm beginning to suspect that the bush where the nearside rear trailing arm connects to the rear hub unit is worn out.

I'm trying to assess my options :

Replace entire rear hub with second hand unit
Replace the bush in the existing hub for standard (if available)
Replace the bush in the existing hub for polyurethane alternative

Are there any others? Which would you do? Which will be cheapest and or easiest?

Thanks for any help

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the trailing arm bush that fits in the hub with the hub still fitted to the car, or do you need to remove the hub to get the bush out?

Thanks

Is this what you mean?

Surely easier with the hub off the vehicle. It might be possible but you'd need to remove the trailing arm to give enough access.

No, I think that's the lateral control arm hub mount bush, I mean the bush where the trailing arm is connected to the hub. I would remove the trailing arm to give it a bit of a refurb.

I've been doing a lot of digging in to this recently to see if I can find alternatives for both fixed & spherical bearing bushings in the rear knuckles (As we know Toyota won't supply these, so it's a new knuckle assy altogether)

The fixed bushing seems to be the same as the one used on various other Toyota models & the Lexus is200. FEBEST make a blueprint part for this - FEBEST TAB-123. The dimensions are the same, I still need to have them pressed in to confirm 100%, but they use the same bolt part number so I'm pretty confident.

The spherical bearing bush is proving more difficult! You can use ones from the Supra (Toyota 42210-14010) as in the ebay link above & source a larger 14mm bolt/widen the hole in the arm by 2mm, but the mr2 surely can't be the only model to use a 12mm bolt, so the search goes on.

The bush you need is 7U

Providing you can get a threaded rod and couple of suitably sized sockets in place there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to extract the original bush from the hub without having to remove the hub.

Thanks guys that's great. In my research I think SuperPro have just developed a replacement spherical bearing which is available for the MR2.

I would really appreciate it if you could report back if the TAB 123 part fits OK?

I may have cracked it. Just taken delivery of FEBEST spherical bearing bush, part code TAB-021z. The measurements match the ones on the '2 perfectly - 12mm bolt hole, 36mm outer diameter, 50mm overall length & 26mm body.

Let's hope it works, as these are just shy of £15 each & no modification of control arms/larger bolts needed.

Do you think it is of the same quality as the OE part
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Excellent, I am poised to order the TAB123 if you confirm it fits. Just to check again, do you think I will be able to remove the old one and press in the new one using a simple screw threaded press, not a full blown hydraulic press? I'm concerned because it seems to have a metal surround which may make removal/fitting more difficult? Any reassurance you can give me?

This looks excellent, just happen to have a pair of rear hub carriers. Maybe a task for next year.

Nice work J03.   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:

Hi J03,
how did the FEBEST spherical bearing bush, part code TAB-021z fit?
Thanks, Phil.

Hi, in all honesty I haven't done anything with the rebuild in months :/ Sorry. As soon as I know something though, I'll update this thread.

I ended paying through the nose for a pair off ebay with the 14mm bolts and drilling out my new hardrace arms. Now removing these bad boys I found to be a real mission, even with the hubs on my work bench, though conversely pressing them back in wasn't too bad.

TAB-021z doesn't fit, too wide by 2mm.

So I ordered the 002z, which I know does fit as it's based on Toyota part 42210-14010. This is the same as what Phil will have probably fitted above & as such, takes a 14mm bolt/needs the arm holes drilling out.

However, I managed to source some steel flanged plain bearings with 14mm outer diameter/ 12mm inner diameter. So these will fit in either end & allow the use of original 12mm bolts.
This method is untested at the moment, but I thought I'd just post up the findings  s:) :) s:)

2 x Febest 021z = £25.50
4 x FMB1217D Flanged Steel Plain Bush 12x14x17mm (FMB.1217.DLU) = £6.82

Hi J03, any updates - did it work?

Also, is this hub-side bush same for lower control arm, as well as toe control arm and trailing arm? Thanks!

As I understand it, this bush is specifically for this location. The hub assembly has two bushes fitted, this one and a more straightforward rubber bush for the trailing arm which is the one I was worried about. The third connection on the hub (for the toe control arms) has a ball joint on the end of the arm itself, not one fitted in the hub assembly.

Poly bushes are readily available for the trailing arm bush.

NB Regarding the bushes used by JO3, if they provide the necessary articulation for the hub side bush I'm not sure it is appropriate for the subframe end of the arm because it won't resist longitudinal arcing movement of that arm.

Thanks lamcote for explaning, that makes sense!

I have nearside hub-side bush shot... So I need at least a pair of those for both sides. And maybe refresh some inner-side bushes. Are there any rubber alternatives beside poly-bushes?

I have never found anything other than poly bushes unless you pay Toyota a small fortune for new hubs/arms with original bushes in them. Or go for second hand hub/arms as required?

Edit. Unless JO3 is saying Febest TAB123 works for the trailing arm, perhaps that could be confirmed? In which case the options may be; TAB123 for trailing arm (both ends?) and 002z (with additional bushes) for hub side lower control arm.

That would be nice if TAB123 worked. I'm not a fan of poly bushes in a daily driver...
