Heard it drop as I was pulling out dipstick to check oil.

Had been drilled (badly) to improve readings.

Presume can't start car to take it anywhere!!!

How do I fix this one?

Always seem to have issue the weekend before a track day!!!!

You could take the pan off and pick it out.  I wouldn't worry too much, it'll just sit in the bottom and stay there.

As for the dipstick.  Cut it back to where it's solid and have your local welder weld another bit of ally onto it and re-finish with a file..  If it can be of approximate length as you'll still know when it's full or low....

You can file some notches into it to help with reading.

Thanls Carolyn

My main concern is having it get into the engine.

So it is safe to leave it in the bottom of the pan and keep driving (even on trackdays etc)?

I've just removed all of the oil in the hope it might just plop out, but nope!

How easy a job is it to remove the sump pan?

Do I need anything else to re-fit it apart from some sealant?

Thanks

Hour job to swap the pan. Make sure you buy some decent FIPG (hondabond etc). Probably less than an hour as you've already drained the oil!

The pan is a bit of a pig- it's pretty much glued on.  It's very easy to unbolt (don't forget the two hidden behind the plastic flywheel cover, which just pops off.) I take a few stanley-knife blades and gently knock them in sideways into the glue between the pan and the block.  You can't just pry the pan off - you'll bend it.  Once you've broken a fair amount of the glue, then it will pry off.
You need to get the sealant off the pan and the block- again -GENTLY - with a Stanley knife blade, scrape the sealant from the surfaces..  Then use some abrasive pad to get the surfaces clean.
When you put it back, use a 1/4" bead all around the pan, have all your bolts ready to hand, push it into place and bolt it up.  I use Dirko Elhring sealant, but the grey Hylomar (which you can get locally) is pretty good.  Give it a few hours to set up and you're good.
Just be patient getting through the glue and you'll be ok.
Takes me about half an hour to get the pan off.  Best part of an hour to clean everything up (i'm fussy) and ten minutes to put it back.

If it's dropped below the windage tray (which it will eventually) it really can't get into the engine... it's your call.

It was never going to plop out, I'm afraid.

add on:  Hubby just pointed out that you've got all the dipstick you need for a track day- 'cos it should be full.  If it's not showing on your shortened one- time to top up anyway.

Well I've drained the oil, refilled engine back up with same oil, warmed tit up and drained it again, hoping that it would flow faster when hot.

Done a flush of the system and then re-filled with new Titan Pro 3 and new Oil filter.

Taken it for a drive and all seems OK, so I am hoping it has dropped through and is just sitting in the sump pan.   s:? :? s:?

I have bought some liquid gasket and will await until I have done Cadwell next week before attempting to remove sump pan and find this bloody bit of metal!   s:x :x s:x

Thanks for all your help and advice everyone, not knowing what might happen is the worst part, so that's given me some reassurance.

Love the comment from Carols Hubby about only needing top half of dipstick anyway!!   s

(EDIT - July 2019: I now actually do this and only use the broken dipstick when on trackdays even though I have a spare for exactly that reason - good shout Mr Carolyn) :)

I suppose this is a risk of drilling the dipstick, regardless of how well it is done, the strength of the end of the dipstick is being reduced.  I was thinking about drilling mine, but I'm not sure if I want to now.   s:| :| s:|

jrichards20 do NOT think above is appropriate.

Where are the MODs ???

Are there rules for some and not others?

MOD - Jock 1. Mods aren't constantly online 24/7 we do have lives and 2's to drive 2. Rules ARE applied evenhandedly 3. This isn't the first time you have made a similar comment, if you have any issues PM a MOD / Committee 4. This was considered a light hearted comment not a flaming

Jock, As above, my comment is clearly meant in jest, and Mel is a mate who I know in person through the forum. If Mel has a problem, which I'm sure he doesn't, he can message me via ROC PM or text message to say it's not appropriate.

Was jock not joking also?
He takes the michael quite a lot.

You could have a poke about with one of these through the drain hole.

You could have a poke around, but if it picks up a piece of ally, you've made a scientific breakthrough.

What is more embarassing that Mark suggested it or that carolyn was the first one to spot it after a whole hour.
Plenty must of read it without thinking

Depends if the steel wire that runs through the middle is still attached to the ally  s:) :) s:)

The end is magnetic for approx half its length, where the inner wire stops I guess...as said if a piece of inner wire was there it could be picked up.

I wish I hadn't bragged about how easy it was to take the sump off now!! Mines just snapped off too - also with a drilled dipstick.

How big are these holes you guys are drilling? The OP had an off-center large hole which was never going to go well.
But a tiny hole smack in the middle?

My #2 car, which I bought to fix-up and experiment with, came with a drilled dipstick.  It broke.  1.5 mm holes.  The tip is stressed every time the dipstick is removed and replaced and the new ability to flex, that the holes give, results in metal fatigue. There will be more drilled dipsticks breaking, I'm afraid.

Hmm... I never thought about how it travels through the dipstick tube and forces the tip to flex a bit.
Might be getting another one
