Castrol oil. Changed from 0W-40 to 10W-60. Is it good?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

local Toyota service centre asked me to change oil type. Previously I was using Castrol 0W-40 and they recommended (and I agreed) to switch to 10W-60. Now I was reading this board and some of my friends told me 10W-60 is for turbo powered engines and for 1ZZ should be avoided. Is this true? Can I safely drive with 10W-60?

Thank you!

Hi

Choice of oil is usually a good way to get a debate going   s:wink:  s:wink:  . To save repeating myself I have a few thoughts down at http://www.apbw47.dsl.pipex.com/SynOil.html with some of the technical data from a variety of oil manufacturers at http://www.apbw47.dsl.pipex.com/oils.html although it seems Castrol have shifted their tech sheets for 0W-40 so I will have to update  s:x :x s:x   .

I could only find a tech sheet from Castrol Australia for 10W-60 but the viscosity rating seems high/thick (170cst @ 40C & 24.1cst @100C) unless as you say it was for an engine working with high temps such as some kind of forced induction and for race purposes (excellent HTHS score of 5.4 although it doesn't say which standard is used).

Out of the choices, I would have gone with the 0W-40. I used Mobil 1 at that viscosity when I had a MR2 but now use a different oil with my S2000. As for your dealer's suggestion who knows why they suggest one oil over another but perhaps they can offer a detailed explanation. Having said all that if it meets the various API and ACEA standards set out in your manual then it is meant to be acceptable for the car.

They usually suggest the one that gives them most profit  s:? :? s:?

I agree, 40 is just fine for normal NA engine. It probably never sees temps that would make 60 a good choice..
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Thank you for your answers guys  :-) :-) :-)

Yes, I know they recommend what would bring profit, however... I'll reask my question in the different form. OK, now I know 0W-40 is just fine, but should I:

1) continue using 10W-60 until next oil change and then switch to 0W-40
2) immediately replace 10W-60 as non-working for me
3) continue using 10W-60 as long as I have this car

What do you think?

Thank you!  :-) :-) :-)
