Rattling on accelaration

Hi Guys

Well I'm a newbie on here, so be nice to me please! s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

Anyway, I've noticed when driving that I seem to get a strange rattle from the underside when I'm passing through about 2,700rpm in all gears... Has anyone else had the same kind of problem and if so, could you tell me what it was??

Seasons Greetings Taffy.

The heat-shield under the main cat on my MR-S caused this very problem when one of the spot welds gave up - my local garage used a couple of those metal strap thingies (very technical!) to hold everything tightly in place.

Our first attempt failed too. Apparently there's a special fitting tool for the straps that gets the suckers really tight. Once they'd found this lurking at the back of their garage, the second attempt worked a charm (15,000 miles so far).

You need to get the strap positioned just right though - and really tight - to stop it from drifting loose.

I guess a grinder would be a more permanent fix though! s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

Is this rattle the graunchy noise (for want of a better description) that I hear between 1000-1500 rpm when pulling away under load? Doesn't happen in neutral.

Was going to get Mr T to look at it when my service comes around, so always better to go in armed with details about the problem!

Its a possible source of your "graunch", although a noise under load (and not in neutral) could be something knocking against something else when engine/box etc flex under torque. Also, the loose heatshield half seems to hit resonance and vibrate against the other half at higher revs.

Difficult to check if it only happens when you're moving s:shock: :shock: s:shock: , so maybe you should ensure they get it on the rollers at the next service.

BTW I'm no engineer, just thinking out loud!

Coincidentally, after finding the source of my main buzz/rattle, a second one just popped up a couple day ago. Thanks to Grant, I went straight to the cat heat sheilds and found that both welds at the front of the shield had broken. I undid the 5 bolts, and with some bending, was able to remove the foreward shield. The rear shield around the cat itself had to remain, and I left it bent open an inch or two so that *it* wouldn't buzz too. Problem solved. Thanks Grant.

So is it ok to run without the heat shields over the main cat?
