That is pretty horrendous.
Yeah I would say the car is priority -1.

All the best mate. Fingers crossed something comes up

Had no idea!
It's horrendous out there isn't it. I was made redundant last August after 29 years.

Thanks all - I'm considering going in to teach physics... the only question I have is whether my character is suitable for trying to teach kids who may not want to be there!

That and I have no idea how financially teachers get by...

Having been "out of work", retired for over 15 years maybe I'm not the person to comment on this. But I was  in and out of work, after 20 years in one case and can empathise with that feeling.
I do believe  it is very important , no matter how difficult, to maintain a positive approach with a prospective new employee.
I guess you have exhausted further opportunities in your normal career and that is why you are considering teaching.
What I am aware  of with teaching in schools is that there are (at least) two pay grades.
A qualified teacher is one that has subject qualifications and also a teaching qualification.
An un qualified teacher is one that has subject qualifications but no teaching qualification.
The former is on a higher pay grade than the latter.

I thought you were more Chemistry than physics.

So whilst I progress with the thoughts of teacher training (not submitted yet - still trying to work it all out) I have managed to get 2 days a week cleaning at a local classic car restoration and racing outfit... it's a nice place to work (albeit a toilet is a toilet) but I got to do race support at Goodwood the other week (never been there before) with two e-types that the clients wanted to take round there. So I got to drive an e-type very briefly round the paddock.

Other than that I find myself driving up and down to Coventry to take engines back and forth, and pickup various car related things and actual cars in the transporter. And washing windows and trying to sort out a rack of a billion nuts and bolts in a variety of UNF/UNC/BSF and actually some metric gauges.. I've not gotten to the section of fibre washers yet.. I don't think my calipers have enough battery.

But life plods on and the degree to which my body has recovered from the previous decades of stress induced illness is good. I am no longer hospitalised if I get a sore throat, I actually haven't had one since losing my work in 24. And I feel more positive about life, I hope to get the MR2 through a "suitable" MOT tester soon as I can't spend money on a new cat at the moment.

Anyway - bit of any update for you all!

On the body front, don't underestimate the benefits of vit D.

Less stress - body responds positively. Who knew. 🙂
I know mine could do with less.

@jvanzyl
Further to my post #1907 concerning qualified/ unqualified teachers.
Have you considered applying for a teaching job with "only" your subject qualifications?
That benefits the teaching institute as they get the same for less and you would get experience of teaching and determine whether that was for you.
Teaching qualifications could then be tried for in parallel with your better paying job.

Chilli Girl

That job sounds right up my street - I'd love that role as I'm car mad. So much better than my desk job and managing 20 staff with all their moans for the last 30 years! :'(   Time to retire?  10 more years to go.

As far as I know I'd if I did do that, it would not really pay very well.. I'm currently considering doing the PGCE bursary route which will pay me to train and I come out with something that should get me in most places.

Well -it is nice being round the cars, and the other guys there are all decent.
Things like C-types and Monanco's and lots of things I've never heard of. Yesterday I drove 355 miles doing deliveries and pickups, today was just cleaning..LOTS of cleaning. But I do actually like maintaining things like the Lathe and mill etc.

It might become something. It's only 2 days a week at the moment, and it's a 30 second commute. I'm currently dealing with my mom having been recently hospitalized and now discharged and I've managed to get her into a care home in the village. So having 2 days of work and the rest to deal with that stuff has actually been quite a blessing. I will try and get some photos of the cars at some point.
