disappointed :-( ducking to left under heavy braking

Finished the brakes this evening and took it out for a drive and wear in session.

Unfortunately under heavy braking from motor way speeds it ducks down to the left.
When I stopped, the front right was radiating more heat than the other corners.

I'd previously posted about the front right wheel not spinning freely which at the time I thought was down to pads not being able to move freely. I subsequently corrected that AND I wound the piston right back just in case.

When I put it all back together, despite my efforts the wheel would not spin freely like the other side. If hoped that this might be resolved with a bit of wearing in- however clearly there is some kind of issue.

Could anyone please suggest some things to look at and the order in which to test them?
Having come so far I don't want to give up and take it to the garage and have them fix it for me.

It was lovely to be driving the car again after so long!  :-) :-) :-)

Could be tha sliders sticking have you checked them?

jvanzyl

I scraped them down like all the others and added a tiny bit of copper grease to the bit where the pads touch the sliders.
However I will recheck them again. Thank you! Anything else to check?

My money is on the piston sticking - wasn't that the problem before?

The pads don't touch the sliders! Think we are confused somewhat, I'm talking about the sliders on the calliper hangers?

The sliders all need greasing with ceratec.
Thats what was wrong with my front drivers side.

That was the back right, which I have hopefully resolved now.... the wheel spins the same as the other side. So I'm assuming its ok...

Erm right.. Ive looked at a diagram, and I'm guessing I now know what a slider is.
I had no idea you had to grease those. I thought you were talking about the metal clips that hold the pads for some reason

can you point me to a resource that shows you how to grease them? I had no idea about that...

EDIT is this what you mean?

correct.
grease at every pad change.

Remove calliper then put the bolt back in the pin sleeve (0n diagram) the pin sleeve should then be able to pull out of the rubber, clean the pin up with wire wool and wd40 then put some grease in the rubber and push pin back in.

jvanzyl

Aaaaaah! Thanks guys!

Are these on the rear too? Or just the front?
I seem to remember there being a slider which I slightly greased using standard grease to make things easier...

Carolyn

The grease you use is part of the trick.  Get some 'Ceratec' (should be able to get it from your local parts shop).  Ordinary grease is bad for the rubbers and copper grease will go kind of dry. 'Ceratec' is designed for the job.  Do ALL your sliders.

I have told him Carolyn.
Previous idiots had used copper grease on mine which is what had caused my calipers to stick.

Thanks both,
So you're saying to use this ceratec everywhere instead of the copper grease?
Does this include the backs of the pads? .....I have a very large pot of copper grease which is now going to just sit there unless I can find a use for it!!

Sorry Scotte, didn't mean to tread on your toes!

Jvanzyl:  Copper grease has its uses, lubricating nut and bolt threads and wheel nuts, for instance....

Sigh.... Thanks Carolyn.
Ok so I need to go back round all 4 corners and regrease correctly this time with the ceratec on the sliders and backs of pads?

Carolyn

The sliders at least, yes.

Ok so I managed to get some silicone grease from carlube  m http://www.silverfoxtractorspares.com/e ... 0227-p.jpg m

Says that its supposed to be used for brake sliders and lubricating rubber bits so shouldn't damage stuff ...

Someone please let me know if this is totally not an equivalent of ceratec?

I use Carlube lithium grease for the sliders. Great stuff. Never seen this silicone stuff.
If it says it's for brake sliders.. It'll do the trick.
...neutiquam erro.

Carolyn

Probably not a direct equivalent, but it also looks like it will do a decent job.
