T-Sport brakes on a MR2?

Hi!

Anyone know if this is possible?

To get my car registered with a 2ZZ engine the norwegian DVLA (?) wants me to use the brakes used by the donor car, or equal.

If this don't fit, is there any other way of getting brake discs at the size of 275x25mm (or bigger) using "bolt-on" OEM parts?
Or if there is a big brake kit that has some sort of TUV documents (or similar)

Look on the Corolla forums at the Avensis 295mm discs and calipers used for upgrade. I'm sure its only a certain mk of avensis that can be used, but not sure which years off the top of my head.
I'd be wary of using corolla upgrade sizes on the MR2 as our driven wheels are at opposite ends, and I'd hate to upset the braking bias that MR T developed.

Thanks, but do you know if the caliper and brackets from a Corolla will fit the MR2?

I will be more than happy to use my stock set-up, I have even supplied the DVLA with TUV documents showing the stock brakes can handle 185bhp, and a top speed of 228km/h

Problem is that a 2zz has 192bhp.........
YES, ONLY 7BHP MORE!

And they want me to upgrade.

If you think your DVLA is causing trouble, come to Norway.....

Anyone else actually impressed with these guys? I know it's a pain, but it shows a depth of ability which I don't really see much of over here in our agencies....

Maybe I just don't understand what you are meaning, but do you think it is OK?

If I had made a 400bhp monster, then yes, maybe, but again the brakes is only going to stop the cars weight, and as long as the total weight don't change I can't see why...

Don't get me wrong, a 400bhp MR2 should definatelly have uprated brakes, but according to the rules here, there is no rules regarding brakes vs power, only brakes vs weight.

But then again, when I see what is OK at your country, at least some rules should be nice....

If you increase the rate you can add energy to the system (with a more powerful engine) then it makes sense to increase the rate you can shed energy form the system (with bigger brakes). IT's not weight alone, but energy, and you're making your car faster. Speed matters more! (Kinetic Energy =1/2 Mass X Velocity Squared)

That said, the standard brakes are very capable and I have no problems with mine, even with sticky tyres. People do trackdays on stock brakes after all. The MR2 has the advantage of better distributing it's braking between front and rear wheels.

I'm afraid I don't know if the corolla brakes just bolt on. See if you can get an owner to measure the offset and bolt spacing? I'd be very, very wary of using a bracket or adaptor on brakes. It's another potential failure point and you do not need your caliper coming free!!

'Jobsworth' demands happen here to:

I had to get our race transporter plated as private HGV.  It was made in the UK and used on a USAF base here, so I had to 'Import' it.

It weighed 12 imperial tonnes.  The plating rule called for metric tonnes.  The weight difference?  Around 200 lbs.  I had to put two extra spacing plates above the rear axle, 1/4" thick, and paint them bright pink (so they could see them), before they would pass it as a legal 12 tonner.

Boy do these types like 'Rules'.

Willwood has a kit apparently ... don't know about the TUV approval but they're a well known manufacturer so you can probably find out from their website...

I would possibly look into the meaning of "equal" a little bit harder...   are they simply saying the diameter needs to be "same or equal" or that their "power" needs to be equal? is it front axel only they're bothered by? what about the rear.. or is it a combined total??
Just trying to understand the details a bit more  s:) :) s:)  I can't help with your actual question.

Corolla brakes dont fit you could possibly get them to fit by making adaptors for the caliper mounts

JoeCool: I am aware of the need for better brakes for faster cars, but the rules only refers to the weight it should stop. So can't see why they would want me to change to something that is not tested and made for the MR2.
At least not when I have supplied papers that proves that the stock brakes can handle 185bhp, 255Nm and 228km/h top speed.

Wabbitkilla: Not seen any BBK out there with TUV documents or similar, as most is for "competition only"

Stupink: I believe it is only the front brakes that needs changes.
I think that if I can get a combination that
A: has the same dimension disc, or maybe bigger (275x25mm)
B: has the same diameter piston in caliper
C: can be mounted as normal (not using adapter brackets or shims, or other hose fittings etc.)
D: is a combination of "off the shelf" Toyota parts

Then I think they will accept it...

Carolyn: Sorry and unexpected to hear:-)
But happy that you got it fixed!!!

Have you had the car on a rolling road ? Maybe only 185BHP.

MR2 Spyder has unique caliper bolt spacing I'm told.

also - (This is from Australia. Your Corollas may use different badging.)

"many big-brake kits require silly big wheels. 260-275mm fit under factory 15" wheels .also, some of the bigger ones require very special wheels to clear the face of the caliper. The MR2 has 2 issues with brake upgrades. firstly, the rotor is very close to the tie-rod-end making disc offset critical. next, any 4 piston caliper comes a lot further out towards the wheel, so another "hit" occurs here unless you have deeply dished 'spokes".i have a box full of different racing type 4 piston calipers here and not one of them can be made to fit with a 15" factory wheel, without major work."

"front brake upgrade. after doing a bit of research into simple brake upgrades, i've read that various US & Jap market Corolla, Vitz & Ratis models appear to have larger diameter rotors and calipers that may well just bolt on . One US supplier of rebuilt calipers says MRS and early Yaris calipers interchange and then Yaris forum members describe Yaris upgrades using the above parts. I know the caliper is the 'tricky" part, because the bolt spacing is unusual amongst Toyotas........ has anyone heard of this?" (This was not answered. Topic veered off into pad discussion.)

Just found yr post on Spyderchat -  m http://www.spyderchat.com/forums/showth ... ght=brakes m

They're not demanding a brake change anymore?

Sorry, forgot to update this tread...

YES the car will be registered with the stock brakes!!!

As far as I know Mr2, and Yaris Verso, (fun cargo? ) uses the same calippers
I have a modified mk2 Yaris, and the brakes from that car won't fit (thats the model mentioned on Yarisworld forum), but sadly it don't apply to MR2...
