My harness arrived on Friday.  I've hooked it up to my Unichip but it looks very different to all of yours.

I'll be plugging it up in a minute to the 2ZZ to see if the existing 1ZZ map runs.

heres a picture of mine compared with Grants

Whats your verdict on the 1zz map working with the 2zz engine? Am i right in thinking that the 1zz is the 5 speed and the 2zz is a 6 speed version, 2003 onwards? Oh and which is which unichip? Which is grants, which is yours?

Adams top

Grants bottom.

1zz is a totally different engine to teh 2zz,

2zz was never fitted to the MR2, well not until Adam and I did some surgery on it  :-) :-) :-)

Not that I claim we are teh first, many have been done in teh US.

It's all hooked up but I forgot to take the keys with me so it couldn't be started.  I'll have a go tomorrow and I'll also put the new vaned intake on.

If your wondering how I got to fit it without the keys.  Well it currently has no doors or roof attached  s:? :? s:?

Millways at Andover quoted me about £120 + VAT, if you fit the harness yourself. He said at the end of the day its a labour rate job, but 2 - 2.5 hours normally does it. Others here have said they do a good job.

Paul, might be worth a look around, £150 pays for an awful lot of petrol!

easy

remove passenger side locker door, or whatever you feel necessary to get access, you may also need to remove the bin liner

there is a hinged carpet flap against teh firewall, pull it forward.

next unplug the wires that go into your ECU

plug them into the sockets on teh PnP loom.

plug teh green wires into the stock ECU, and teh other wires into the Unichip.

re-assembler after testing that everything starts.

easy.

If it isnt ok, you'll soon know when you get a CEL or the thing wont run properly....

The 2 switches are for ECU power, which you must leave on. (its provided as a handy way to reset CEL's when mappping the chip on the rolling road) Also the map selection switch, whcih you can leave in any position, as both maps should be loaded with zero values.

Been quoted £60 p/hour for fitting at Engine Advantages in Witham, nearest Dastek dealer to me...apparently they have done a roadster before not a member on here then! Reckon it will take 2-3 hours.

I just had the chip running in the car.  It didn't make any difference to it's usual charateristics and having the ECU button switched on or off made no difference either.  No CEL's.  I didn't push it to see if lift would engage with the 1ZZ map.

I am booked in at Millway for 08.30 on the 7th March - they have room for one more that day if anyone is interested?

Going to take my video camera for scarey footage of my car at high speed whilst not going anyway  s:shock:  s:shock:

Liz & Grant

Not fitting Unichip until exhaust is on, what with forthcoming holidays may be even late April!   s:cry:  s:cry:

Can you do me a favour. Can you chat up Millway when you are there and ask about fitting, price etc. Not sure if it would be easier to let them do the whole lot, or get the special tool and fit it myself. Or even your own views on the subject would be appreciated. Is the time taken to get to the ECU significant, or quick?

Thanks

I would personally recomend getting hold of the tool, as its easily available at te moemnt via Heath amd costs pnly £20 onc P+P for a whole set. This means you are able to remove and re-install the chip anytime you fancy. And who knows when you might need such an unfindable tool in the future?

As for the fitting itself its easy. Move both seats forward, open both luggage doors. Remove the passenger side luggage door (3 10mm Bolts), the drainbag protecion panel from the side of the luggage bay (2 pull clips), and the luggage bay floor itself (another 2 10mm bolts in the back). Once thefloor is out of the way then you use your special tool on the 2 screws behind the carpet flap, and then plug your chip in...  Now reverse the process.

10 minutes, 15 if your slow and careful.

You cant actually buy the harness on its own, it comes as part of a kit from Unichip North America. Some people were able to get a harness on its own via the recent GB I set up here, but Jack would only sell one harness on its own with every 5 unichip plug and play kits.

You could of course contact Jack and ask him if he would mind you joining in the MR2-ROC Group Buy, as you missed it first time around, and he may let you in on the action, and sell you pre-mapped chip and harness?

The man you need to contact is Jack Friedman, the general manager of Unichip North America...
