i have been bad and not checked or replaced the gearbox oil since ownership. was on the 2 do list. Didn't find the job hard to do, even cleaned the bolts up while it was draining, painted them red once done for future reference. Only drained out 1350ml out and managed to get  back 2l back in. with  no signs of any leaks the last numpty must have under filled it....... just hoping no long term damage done! hopefully will improve shifts tho, already have short shift and brass bushes. hopefully will smooth things out. will update when been for a run. MOD - While this hole (pic 2) CAN be used to fill the gearbox, it is not designed for this purpose and it is also not the correct process. Please see the How To for changing gearbox oil

Jacob, please be aware that for a U.K. Model ( with LSD ) the oil capacity is 1.8 L.
Full is indicated by oil coming out of the upper opening shown on your second photo, this is also the " correct" opening to fill through.
Your first photo shows a blanking plug for a redundant speedo drive when the engine is used on another vehicle.
Some people do use this as a convenient oil filler opening but either measure ( 1.8 L ) from empty, or remove upper filler/ gauge plug to determine when adequately filled.
To rectify the overfill I suggest you remove the upper filler/ gauge plug with the car level, catching the oil in a suitable container, and replace the plug when oil stops running out.
Should loose 0.2 L if all is " correct".

hi, thanks for reply. um yeh i did fill it up from the blanking plug as you have suggested, it seemed easier, but however did leave the upper fill/level plug out whilst topping up from the blanking plug, filled it up till the oil came out of the level plug. thing just seemed to drink the stuff! Not sure if my car had LSD as its an early one? I think ill check that level plug again! when filling did have the car fairly level. anyone got any ideas? on a positive note woeful gear changes are a thing of the past there now silky smooth! Your thoughts appreciated.

level checked tonight and just a dribble came out so im fairly confident its not overfilled. can anyone clarify the amount for lsd and non lsd cars? as a coincidence since doing the oil i have a (new noise) think its the alternator bearings maybe, getting worse. sometimes i think its one step forward and 2 back! getting the tracking done tomorrow so have asked them to have a listen to see what they think it is. Jacob, my 2 is an 02 and my understanding is that all UK cars had LSD  so the 1.8 L should be right for your car.
If your box is filled just to the level then I would be inclined to accept leave it at that.

One step forward and 2 back can apply to many things in life but persistence often wins.

thanks, garage said it maybe alternator bearings but would need to take belt of and check things, so did myself. its the bottom idler pulley, first clue was the nut that holds it on was missing or must have fallen of! very rusty took of and bearings shot. will replace as well as the tensioner pulley and belt as its looking tired and cracked. so not to bad news! also managed to get a few more bits done that night will update readers ride when i get 5 mins. wont be ordering tonight are Blueprint ok for the pulleys? Can I ask a couple of basic questions?  :-) :-) :-)
I want to change the oil in my gearbox - is the oil shown in the first pic the correct type for the job?
Why is it called transaxle? Is this gearbox oil?
The pic that shows the filler and drain plugs - is that taken from the front of the car looking towards the rear?
Thanks!

Oil is 75w90 gl-4 and gl-5.
Transaxle because the transmission is essentially the axle, but it has drive.
Yes it's gearbox or transmission oil/fluid. NOT differential fluid.

See this thread for the correct filling process (as Toyota specifies)

Just a note for clarification on the second photo above.
The nut shown as being the filler is NOT. It is a blank.
The fill nut (on 5 speeds) is a 24mm nut, the same as the drain nut and is to the right of the red coloured nut.
See the "How to" for changing the clutch, which gives a clear and correct photo for the fill points on both 5 and 6 speed boxes.
