just picked my 2004 roadster a few days ago and have read about the precat problem on earlier models, will mine still have precats and is it still wise to remove them.

Hello
If you have an O2 sensor removal tool take the sensors out and have a look.
Word of warning!! merely unscrewing them and screwing them back in can beenough to upset them and throw a code.
Very delicate and prone to going mardy.

That said, the pendulum on the whole pre cat thing is moving away from villian towards victim.
If the pre cats fail. It is usually because something further up th echain has failed first.

So right now wouldn't worry too much about the pre cats.
