I'm collecting an '06, 8 thousand miler tomorrow. (not typo)  I suspect the oil hasn't been changed since the first service. It's neither black nor clean, but I will replace it asap.

Some questions..... I've seen mention of Forte flush being good. I'm unclear though....does it get added to the existing oil before changing it?

Oil type. I won't put a cheap oil in it, nor am I going to spend £40 on 5litres. My opinion is that it's not a high-performance high-revver, so a decent oil that'll be changed every 6k or so is what I'd want. 5w/40?

Oil filter - any brand particularly regarded?

Have a search around. I'm sure Carolyn mentioned something about flush not being worth it.
With regards to Oil, the Fuchs Titansyn appears to be a good shout at around £20 + P&P from Opie
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-984-fuchs-titan-supersyn-5w-40-high-performance-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

A post I did see which seemed a good idea was this (I haven't tried it)....
empty the oil out. But leave the old filter in place, but replace all the oil with cheap 5w/30 (or whatever). Cheapest stuff possible.
Run it around for 200 miles odd.

Then empty out, replace the filter, refill oil with decent stuff.

There was talk about a filter that had a slightly higher capacity. I can't remember where I saw that.
I've just replaced mine with a standard bosch one. I'm not sure it makes much difference - many people here seem to use the standard Toyota branded one which I guess is generic Denso branded.

Actually I do rate Forte flush.  Gets a lot of muck out of the engine.  Won't un-gum rings if they're stuck, but that's not the point.  Yes, put it in the existing oil.  Follow the instructions to the letter.  Be prepared to catch the oil with a bucket - it will be  very thin and come out in a BIG hurry.  Only idle the car do NOT drive it with engine flush in it.  (Sorry Stu).
5W 30 fully synth.  5,000 max between changes.

Okey dokes, sorry, my bad. I'm sure one of the more knowledgable people here said that it was a bit "snake oil".
But blimey, yes, I wouldn't consider driving the car with flush in. I was talking about flushing with oil!

I'm intrigued on the state of things like the hoses on an 8k car.
My missus has a 10k Fiat Panda (57 plate).Other than servicing and MOT every year, it doesn't get driven. It did just over 200 miles last year. That was to collect my MR2!

Every year, we end up replacing at least one of the hoses, because they're deteriorating.
Not to mention having to ensure we don't leave the brakes on (yes, she did that one year, it wasn't cheap to get those fixed).
We've had to empty the fuel once, plus the filter was gummed up.

Cars and engines are designed to be used!

Thanks for comments.....recommendation for oil Stu....thanks, but I had seen Carolyn's name on a Forte thread. A cheap oil isn't necessarily going to help clean it out as it probably won't have much in the way of detergents.  I have seen the suggestion of using a diesel oil as they have more detergents.....
More pfaff than using a flush (& costlier) though.

The car was stored for a few years, has been used a little in the last 2 years.  Time will tell.   s:wink:  s:wink:

If the engine oil isn't going black there's likely nothing for an engine flush to clean.
Would say 6k is a bit long for the mr2 engine , known weak point so if you have a good one go every 3k.
My opinion is it's a high performance, high revving engine so I change the oil when its gone over to pine/light brown.
If you're doing them yourself , 50 quids for the bits, it's cheaper than a night out.

I would definitely do 2 oil changes in quick sucession if we thing we're dealing with 10 year old oil here.

Get 4 litres of dirt cheap (but correct spec) oil, then the oil you actually want to use. Get 2 filters, Bosch ones are £4  a piece from GSF/eurocar parts, and Forte engine flush.

Drain the current oil using the flush as per instructions. Change filter and put in the cheap oil and run it a while (A week or so if you like). Then Change it again.

I did this on my 100k mile 2ZZ engine when I first got it, for peace of mind. It now does that nice thing where you change the oil and it stays translucent for a good 6 months afterwards, and the inside of my engine is sparkly. The whole process can cost about £50 and IMO is well worth it.
