Hi, hoping someone can help. I found some loose material smoking in the nappy today. Can anyone tell me where it was originally installed, and why it might have started combusting? Thanks

Usually sat on the top side of the rear nappy. mine started glowing red , safe to say i ripped it out, that was due to heat from non standard exhaust sitting to close to it..i did wonder what the burning smell was for a couple mile aswel haha

Thanks for the reply. Nearly pooped myself when i saw all the smoke. I'd wondered if it was from the nappy, or from the metal plate behind the exhaust higher up. Bit worried still, should I be? Should i be worried about heat warping or melting anything else now that material is gone? I.e bodywork? Is there any other issue i need to think about i.e is something hotter than normal, or hotter than it should be?

Mine melted some of the nappy aswell, i adapted the nappy to suit  s:) :) s:)

If theres anymore material sat on the nappy you would probably be best to remove as a precaution?

Might be worth checking the boot/bonnet lid aswel as its on that and make sure it didnt come from that, but am sure you would of noticed if it was from there

Apart from that not sure just keep an eye or nose on it

And that was why I originally went nappyless

Thanks both. Had visions of my baby combusting. Wife left me to it and got bus, i nursed the 2 home, very worried. Stressful day! (Which included Ikea trip! Thank **** for John Smiths, feeling better now)

It's only stapled into the nappy. I found mine wandering around loose when I first got mine. Quite possible it could have lifted, and got too close to the cat or exhaust if yours was in a similar state.

The roof is down on my MR2,

Cheers Fin, considering removal now like mrcypher and Ardent suggesting. New one is £126 from mr2-ben.

Cheers, i'm a numpty though and can't remember what insulation was there before yesterday! Going to have a look at other members pics of inside of bonnet, but here's a picture of mine right now. Is there any insulation missing in that pic?

Looks right to me.
Either that, or both of our cars are missing some.  :-) :-) :-)

Lol! Cheers for that. Was going to start taking off nappy today but started raining. I'll get it later in the week.

You can see on the nappy where its got hot and melted a bit.

I had to cut most of them out as they was melted worse than that

Exactly the same thing happened to me today!
Blasting about in wales with a friend who has an MX5. Short discussion of i think my brakes are smelling, checking rims, seem fine, then looking down from the enginebay "dude youve got leaves and stuff on fire in your engine bay". Took the nappy off ... and it was the heatproof shielding smoldering

Could leave the nappy off, but I presumably its there to keep the enginebay clean... unless marketing thought it looked cool, like the faux diffusers which are now trending.

The splash guard is still fine, just no heat shielding fabric on it. anyone know what to replace fabric with?
