Hi,

I've searched the forum and read up on the metal luggage racks you can put over the back for a suitcase.  I'd really like this option for holidays etc.  I'm looking to get my first MR2 at the moment.  I was wondering if there are any MR2 mk3 models that a luggage rack WOULDN'T fit on?  And what if the car has a spoiler just behind the hood or at the back?

Thanks all  s:) :) s:)

A luggage rack won't fit if you've got the TTE Sport (banana) spoiler fitted.  I'm not sure, but you might get away with the TTE Ducktail spoiler (someone will correct me if I'm wrong), but other spoilers which attach to the boot-lid will all probably be incompatible.  All MR2 Mk3's are the same with regards to fitting a luggage rack - the boot-lid is exactly the same on prefacelift and facelift.  You can get a lot of luggage in a Roadster behind the seats and under the frunk, also in the passenger footwell & seat if you're on your own - just use squashable bags (or no bags at all!) and be prepared to maybe have some creased clothes.  Hope this helps.

Thank you MisterK (sorry I called you Mark, I read the bottom of your text box by accident!). I will keep in mind no spoilers then to be on the safe side but it's good to know it will fit all body shapes. The one I have my eye on at the moment doesn't have spoilers so fingers crossed I'm happy with it when I see it this weekend!

Carolyn that rack looks much more sturdy than ones I've seen. Do you remember the make or where you got it from at all?

Ah .... proved me wrong, though I did say 'probably'   s:D :D s:D     It looks a close fit but from the photo it does seem as if it could be moved further forward away from the spoiler.  I agree with tiff272, it does look like a nice piece of kit.

Hmmm, I'll take a peek and see if there's a label.  No label.  Bought it at a swap meet.  It's very adjustable in its dimensions, telescopic for depth and width.  Sorry not much help except search for adjustable boot rack??

This one is close....

Slightly off topic but curious myself, I saw earlier you were considering staying hard topped all year round? I'm sure someone more experienced than me could say how much potential luggage carrying room there is on top of the folded roof, behind the headrests?

Thanks Carolyn, yes if it's adjustable I suppose it wouldn't need to be MR2 specific as long as I can test it on the car before I buy.

Midlife that's a very good point I hadn't considered. In reality unless the weather is awful I'd probably go on holiday with soft top. But it's a good point to remember for day to day luggage if push comes to shove. Thank you

I've been out in all weathers with my soft top and no issues, although I've only had it since March and it's not my only car so can't speak about winter. But the heaters are fantastic, a little too good for such a small space with the roof on!
You just have to get creative with carrying things and remember if you load it with the top up you're going to have to keep the top up. Coats/jackets etc make great seat  covers, just get a little bit creased. [emoji23]

If you want a rear spoiler then you will probably have to get a rack that clamps to the sides only like Carolyns.
I have a rack that clamps to the sides and the front and rear of the bootlid so cant use it know I have fitted a ducktail spolier!

You would be surprised how much you can fit in the car though. The alarm move wheelflip gives more room in the froot and you can always leave the spare at home and take a foam cannister if you want more room for a trip. You can always remove the passenger seat for moving things like a set of wheels etc.
Airline size bags like the cabinmax do fit in the rear compartments and you can get 2 in if the toolkit is not in there too.

Hi I have just posted a link to a Youtube video Showing how I increased the luggage capacity of my MR2. I have a full TTE kit fitted with a ducktail spoiler. I got the rack of fleabay on a site called MicksGarage. Check out the video see what you think, search MR2 Mk3 Spyder luggage solutions on YouTube.
If two wheels move the soul, this MR2 moves my nuts up under my armpits
