Won't Rev above 4,000rpm

I'm really hoping someone can help me with the above.

I currently own a 2001 Mr2 which was left to me by my dad who passed away a few years ago so really would like to try get it back on the road and going again.

It's got an issue as above, where it won't rev above 4,000rpm and sounds like it's hitting a limiter, no fault codes stored or shown and no engine light showing. It always starts up first time perfectly and will never cut out, it's just the rev problem. I remember it always was very poor on the emission tests whilst he owned it at mots, didn't know if this was related or not though.

I have checked the pre cats after reading the problems on here which have been removed already. I replaced the main cat, still no change.

I have also replaced the MAF sensor, seemed to idle better but didn't change the problem at all.

Have checked the fuses in the engine bay all okay.

Really at a loss as to what to check and replace next, if it wasn't the sentimental value I would have probably given in by now! I've read that ecu could be an issue?

Look forward to the suggestions and using this forum a bit more.

First, I seem to remember someone else had this question the other week and was offered advice. Try doing a search.

Second, when you replaced the MAF, did you reset the ECU? You can do this by disconnecting the battery for say, 20 minutes.

This is something a few have had over the years. Something that is worth checking, particularly if it won't rev post 4K when not under load, is the earth point on the crank position sensor shielding sleeve.

Thanks for the response been having a look and trying to relate other owners issues with mine.

As with the MAF sensor I did let it reset as you said and run it up to temperature

Will try this next, looked on the forum and Internet but couldn't see a picture or location of the sensor. Could you point me in the direction or have an image to hand to work off?

Forgot to mention before it does this whatever the situation, load or no load.

Thanks

Bottom of the timing cover, towards the front of the car.  It's a bit of an awkward sod.

Thanks, is it easiest to get too from the bottom of the car?

A code reader wouldn't hurt. See if any codes are stored. Lots of members on here have code readers. Maybe you can find someone local willing to give you a hand on that.

Result! Took the crank position sensor off tonight cleaned the earth and refitted. Car revved out for the first time! Still a little lumpy down below which it hasn't done before I removed so I recon the senso is looking like the issue. The earth on the sensor was very mangled and looked poor.

Had a look online and couldn't see many for sale, where is best to source a new one from? As not sure I trust a used one if it's a common problem.

Thanks again to everyone for the input so happy I'm on the right track with this now.

Rutland MR2 may well have one.  The sensor is pretty reliable, so a used one should be ok.
