Floor Mat Clips Gone

Hi all,

Just bought an MR2.  There's no way to secure the driver floor mat in place.  If I lift up the mat I see two holes where I assume clips should have been.  My guess is they've been ripped out by accident.

I think I've found replacement clips ( m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Toyot ... Sw3ydVwNUo m )

But presumably I will need some metal ring reinforcement on the carpet hole for the clip to go in.  I'm having trouble finding these.  Does anyone know what they would be called or what I could search in Google to try and find them?

Plus would I need to take up the carpet to install the rings?... that fills me with fear, but will cross that bridge when I come to it!

Anyone got any ideas?

I used to have a mat in my old car which had grips on the bottom.
I seem to remember you can buy carpet grip in places like Ikea. MIght be easier?

I ordered some mats from a thread on here a few years ago with a discount code and the mats came with 2 clips included. I seem to remember £12 or £14 all in.

The clips should just push in to the floor.

Thank you both.  I've already got MR2 mats and went to Toyota and got a couple of the clips (exactly like the ones photo'd of in that thread).  If you see my photo above there is just a hole in the carpet, do I literally just shove the plastic clip in that hole?  It doesn't seem like the clip would be in very tightly if I do that

If there's just the hole in the carpet you're going to need something for the clips to expand into. If you're near a Boyes or similar look for some brass eyelets, they'll be in a kit with the tools to fit them. Won't be more than a few quid for the set, easy as peas.

I havent actually changed my clips but if you look at them, they are just 2 plastic legs with a ledge at the bottom to hold them in place. I imagine you just push them into the hole in the carpet and into a metal plate with a hole in under the carpet, the 2 legs compress, go through the hole and spring back so the ledges hold it in. The clips do spin round once in. Should just take a second to do.

The clips on mine were already smashed when I got it so don't have that reference to go by but I'm sure there's a plastic grommet in the carpet, that's why I suggested the eyelets. I assumed they were push in clips but I'll look out for the others now I know. Cheers!

But there's no metal bit in the carpet at all, no matter how far down you push. That was what baffled me so much. I think someone has accidentally ripped them out, possibly whilst pulling the clips out a bit heavy-handedly.  I'm thinking the brass eyelets may be the way to go. I've not got the car back until the weekend so I will have a mess then. Otherwise I'll have to find a different way to secure it I think.

I am surprised to hear they wont just push in.

I have had a look through my pictures to see if I have a picture of a bare floor pan but dont have anything sharp enough to show what is there unfortunately.

I think you would have to remove the drivers seat, centre console and side scuff plate to be able to lift the carpet enough to see the floor in that area.

Some floor pan photos in this thread;

Looking at them, it does look like there should be the retaining clip in the carpet so I was wrong!

You may need to talk to a breaker from the affiliates section to see if they could remove the missing bit from another carpet perhaps?

I will have a mess at some point. I'm sure there will be some aftermarket clips or something that would work. I'd rather keep things as 'original' as possible but for now I just want to make sure the mat doesn't bunch up.

I just couldn't tell if I was being blind or something & making things overly complicated! I will post if I figure something out.
