Thought I ought to get myself one of these but I see they are either right hand or left hand thread.

Which one do I need for the 2?

I have never looked at them before but when I did there seem to be cheap left or right hand ones or more expensive kits that that do both.

Get the laser left and right handed thread rewind tools from machine mart. They are solid, and cheaper than ECP and the like.

Often one side will be left and the other side will be right, and you need the seperate tool for each.

Thats why I thought (foolishly) they were designed for both.

Me too. It's the same as EuroCrapParts sell for about £25.

Boss and stu.
Can it also be used to wind the piston out?

You have to keep unscrewing, but yes.
My caliper has been manipulated more times than a politician's promise!

I bought a standard one from Halfrauds for about 15 quid and that works absolutely fine

A word of caution about cheap ebay chinese tools / copies and the like.

I ordered a chain breaker that looked like a well known make and substantial, it was cheaper than the stores. When I got it, it broke on first use. The metal looked chunky but was obviously rubbish, it just snapped like a carrot. It didnt come with the original paperwork or anything and was obviously a chinese knock off.

Not saying all tools are like that but, I know others that have ordered cheap online tools and have had to pay twice. At least for a few quid more you can collect it from a local shop, know its a genuine item and have some sort of guarantee.

Hopefully the Amazon one does the trick though.

To be honest, I'd agree, but in the case of a caliper rewind tool, it's very easy to fashion something or use another tool.
I can't really see how it would break - it's rather a simple tool which is one of those overpriced things.

And this comes from someone who screams AUD (Always Use Denso) when it comes to O2 sensors.

Yeah, cheap is not always a bargain, have been stung before but at least with amazon you get the customer ratings and that does help to spot rubbish sometimes (this one is 4.5 stars so pretty confident).

I am hoping that as this is a very simple device it will work ok for the few times I may use it. Sometimes the more expensive items look just the same as the cheap ones so you dont always get what you pay for!

Mine seems solid enough and I've used it on the Mini to change the rear pads, as well as several handbrake related battles on the 2
