Main cat disintegrating!

Hi all, am currently doing some modifications to exhaust system, new manifold and weld in sports cat. manifold done fine, chopped the old cat out and thought id have a look at  the comb between the old and new cat, i was surprised!

the insides had gone very brittle/cracking up. Touched with a screwdriver would turn to dust easily. We are aware of the precat issue, just wondering if the cat had got any worse if it could have got sucked back up into the cylinders? i cant be sure but i would guess this was the original cat from when the car was made so 16 years old. Maybe one to make others aware of.
