Had the spare wheel well out for the first time and there's a fair bit of surface rust around the area, and on the beam running across.  When I was looking into swapping the PAS pipes, other people who'd posted photos had similar rust on theirs.

Has anyone actively gone out of their way to treat this, and if so what did you use?  In comparison, my mum's MR2 which is of a similar age, but half the mileage and garaged for a lot of its life also has similar rust in the same areas.  I'm guessing the plastic cover traps water in or something?

Wire brush, Kurust and Hammerite was my approach. Once the plastics are back on you can't see any of it.

You' ll likely find that the ABS support bracket is also rusted away to ' lace' underneath.
You didn' t mention the steering UJ, that is also usually corroded.
I repaired the bracket , wire brushed painted and greased the UJ.
I sprayed inside the front beam with a Bilt Hamber product, same treatment I used on the rear cross member.
Also sprayed the metal steering pipes with this.
I also de rust  and repaint a bit at a time.

The front end is subject to the same atmospheric and weather conditions as the rear end, but the front end doesn' t have the engine heat to dry out the covered up area would be my thoughts about why this area corrodes.
The rear cross member, corrodes, as we know but being below the engine ( heat source) doesn't get the drying effect the rest of the engine bay gets. I suggest also that the more localised heat from the exhaust warms up the rear cross member enough to encourage internal condensation but not enough to dry it out.

Food for thought then.

I've replaced the PAS pipes as they were rusted to buggery.  The steering union joint wasn't in bad condition to be honest but I've fully greased it.  Will try some kurust and hammerite on the visible bits.

I think the plastics tend to rub the paint off where they touch as well, due to not being held in place tightly. All the cars I've seen with the plastics removed have rust in the same contact places.
