H rated Toyo's

Okay, I know that there are loads of posts about tyres on here, believe me I have read most of them today!  s:( :( s:(

New car has OEM Bridgestone Re040's on the front, they are okay but look as if they have been on a while. Rears are new. They are Toyo Proxes CF2.( I think quite a new design?) So to keep it right I just need to buy  two 185/55/15 Toyo Proxes CF2 for the front, right?

The issue is that the Toyo's in that size are only H rated (130mph) not V rated (149mph) like the rears.

What do people think? I am 100% certain that it would not be dangerous but would it be frowned upon by my insurance? would they even know?

Best solution would be x4 Yokohama's, I know, but having just forked out more than I really wanted to for the car another £400 might be pushing my luck with the mrs  s:lol:  s:lol:  It's not my daily driver this time so I am not going to run them off anytime soon either.

Any thoughts?

Mike.

I'd go for two tyres at the front of your choosing.
The re040 are better, but older and harder to get hold of.
I know that 2 sets of tyres across axels is frowned upon, but it's truly not going to kill you.
So if you want to migrate to Yokohama ad08s, or stick with the (known good) re040s, get a set of those for the front. Then buy the rears matching when it's time. The rears go first anyway.

That's what I'd do anyway.
The tyres behave differently,but if it's just a daily pootler...really won't matter.

As for the speed rating... I've always found this iffy. H should be fine, but if the factory spec is W for example, then I don't know what the law is with regards to insurance. I'll let someone else take that one.

I would be wary if the speed rating on the tyre was less than specified as standard. Insurance companies have been known to not pay claims if they can find a reason not to.
If you do want to fit them, I would email your insurance co to check this is ok and that there is no extra premium before you fit them.

I would do what Patrick has suggested though and start the swop to AD08rs with the fronts.

I have Proxes 15 all round on my pfl ( Proxes are brand new ) and Potenza's 15F / 16R on my fl,  both 2's behave perfectly - I alternate the motors, as my daily ride and have found that on a certain sharp corner approaching Lee on the Solent, the pfl tends to stay in the corner Whereas the fl with Potenza's responds more quickly!!

T1-Rs are V rated if you're still uncertain.

Just checked the bridge stones on the front and they are over 6 years old now. Some cracking between the treads too.

I just want some AD08R's on.(£401 delivered from camskil) I don't think H rated would be the way to go either.

H = no. simply on the insurance.

If something was to happen, you can rest assured they would use that against you.

If fitting tyres with a lower speed rating than the car came with were a major issue then that would kill the winter tyre market stone dead.

A quick look on Mytyres shows 128 winter tyre options in  size 185/55/15, 126 of which are H rated or less (the two V rated options coming from those legends of tyre manufacturing Syron and Goodride).

So, it logically follws that if fitting H rated winters is OK, then fitting H rated summer tyres is too.

Furthermore, an H rating (130mph) is sufficient for the maximum top speed of the vehicle (130mph).

Of course, geting written confirmation from your insurance company would be no bad thing, just to be 100% sure. Don't think most insurance companies would be bothered, but you may have been unlucky enough to insure with the one or two pedants that are.

The Audi had separate requirements for winter and summer tyres. Winter tyres obviously aren't meant for high speeds, and the assumption is you're not doing high speed....because it's winter....  s:) :) s:)

Can't imagine the MR2 handbook states winter tyre recommendations  s:) :) s:)

Depends what you call high speeds - I should imagine there are plenty of H rated winter tyres hitting 100mph+ on the german autobahns when the conditions allow each season.

When I had my first two MR2s and was doing a lot more miles I used to run my Fabia on winters and keep them on all year round   s:wink:  s:wink:

Can't really see an insurance company getting excited about the speed rating of tyres fitted to a car valued at £1000 - £4000.

If it was new car or something worth 40k+ then maybe.

They wrote my last car off (at a value of £2300) over the phone without seeing it - wife tried to drive it through some deep water and hydrolocked the engine [emoji849]
