Say I wanted to start learning about engine management, instruments / sensors and control strategies / algorithms in ECU's - anybody recommend any good reads?

It's not an easy thing to find, as most who know their way around this stuff talk in jargon and use far too many acronyms.

An old fashioned tome on engine tuning (pre ECU) would give a good foundation to move on to the digital stuff.  Then a book with a good glossary.  I've not found one yet.

This is a good book. It doesn't answer your questions but it's along the lines of what Carolyn said and gives a good overall understanding

Cheers both.  I'll have a look at the one from the link. This all stems from having removed O2 sensors to inspect precats, using torque to diagnose subsequent eml, looking at trends of sensors on torque and wondering about short long term fuel trim. Probably be gobbledegook to me at first, but I'm curious. As a controls engineer  looking at my Stft 2 trend it looked a bit like a badly tuned loop, it offended my sensibilities  s:) :) s:)

The most "interesting" thing I've found is the way it defines its LTFT across ranges and when it goes into open and closed loop.

It's a very very clever ecu, designed to keep the car at its most efficient no matter what. Much to the detriment of any piggyback ECUs.

The volkswagen ECUs are far more stupid, in comparison.

Very interesting stuff.

The knock sensor input is used very well, I've experienced it (unfortunately) and it's almost seamless on a N/A car.
