Clutch Clicking when Pedal Pushed

Hello all.

I did read up a little on this, but there's not a lot to be found online.

After a few miles today my clutch started making quite a loud clicking sound when depressed. Just one click and not every time (most of the time though). It did in once I'd stopped too, and you could feel it through the car a little, as well as hear it.

On the drive home, all was fine. Not noise at any point.

The sound did seem to come from the front rather than the back, possibly fairly close to the pedal itself.

I've only just got the car and at 14 years old/72k miles I'm quite prepared to accept some repair bills. It did however have a new clutch in 2010 at 49k miles though I suspect this noise isn't related to the bits that get replaced.

Thanks, Steve

Worth checking your fluid level.  The cylinder and reservoir are under the big front plastic.

Thanks, though it doesn't look easy to remove that big bit of plastic.

I'll have a go tomorrow and see what I find.

To release the pins holding the plastic, push the centre down gently then lift the whole pin up. To reset them push the centre up and then back down again to lock it once re-installed.

P.S. Be careful with them as they are quite brittle and the tags break off.

If only I'd read that bit first... A couple broke but such is life.

Fluid looked topped up and clean though, so if the problem comes back I'll have to get my local garage to take a look, though of course other people might have a thought on this.

Thanks everyone.

I suspect that, as you only just got the car, something was a little stiff from not being used for a while and that using the car has solved the issue.

Well done for having a go!

Thanks Carolyn, I hope so but I remain unconvinced.

On the plus side there are many leaves and much dirt under the big plastic. Nice chance to do some cleaning, which I always find strangely satisfying.

Also good chance to treat any rusty bits and put some paint on them.

I am sure I have read about a noise from the clutch being helped by lubricating the pivot point?

Best to search a few keywords in google but include mr2roc in the search and that can help find other posts on the subject.

If it's from the pedal and happens exactly 1/2 way down it'll be the assist spring changing angle.

Ah, that sounds like a very likely culprit. It did feel like something "giving" very quickly. Presumably not a big deal but if there's an way to stop this happening I'd like to give it a go.

Thanks for the advice.
