Alternator pulley bearing

I have a slight whine from the engine that I knew was coming from one of the pulleys on the aux belt. My mechanic has identified that it's coming from the pulley bearing on the alternator.

Does anyone have any experience of replacing such a thing? Is it a Haynes 3 spanner job or would I be as well replacing the alternator - after all it's on a (2zz) engine that's done about 110k miles.

If so, are alternators still available on a supply new/return old arrangement? Any suggestions for a supplier?

Lastly does anyone know if the 2zz alt is the same as the 1zz?

Doubt it. 2zz revs a good 1500rpm more by design, at least. Replace it. Poor thing has done 110k miles  s:) :) s:)

Different part numbers:
27060-22200 for 2zz and
27060-22100 for 1zz

Both 12v and 80A though. So, guess that's why you can use either.

Aye, makes sense.

Getting quotes around £120 for a refurb exchange unit so not too sore.

They are standard off the shelf bearings though. Chances are at that mileage you aught to change the brushes. I am sure you can buy those too.

I recall trying to dismantle an alternator from a Corolla about 25 years ago to change the brushes. I gave up & took it into an auto electrical specialist. He was cursing me when I went back to collect it   s:lol:  s:lol:    s:lol:  s:lol:

I might just get the replacement unit. Been looking at the info on fitting & it looks like one of those that will have me in a panic & struggling halfway through the job.

I found it helpful to remove the canister and the engine mount.  Access is much easier that way.

That was on a 1ZZ, but I think the priciple still applies.

Yes brushes.  Little ones on the end of the shaft.  Part of the regulator/rectifier system.

I  just had mine replaced, it had a rattly knock about it..
My garage supplied it (altenator drive belt pulley)for £70 +vat and also replaced the belt £15+vat at the same time.. (original parts)
The labour was lumped in with a lot of other work so not too sure what to expect there.
