Tein Superstreet Issues

Morning all,

Hoping someone can offer some help and advice...  I'm having two problems with my Tein Superstreet setup:

1/ One of the top-mount nuts keeps unscrewing itself; (front passenger side) I've checked the thread on the nut and the bolt it's going on to, both seem to be good, no obvious signs of wear or cross threading.  I tried a bit of loc-tite but that didn't seem to help so now I"m wondering if it would be ok to put a second nut on to act as a locking nut, or if that might have other issues?

2/ On the front drivers side, the small alan key bolt which adjusts the firmness? (I'm sure there's a proper technical word but it's monday and my brain hurts already!) has snapped part way down meaning no adjustment.  The only way I can think of to get the broken piece out is to carefully drill into it, put a small screw into the hole and then try to unscrew it that way.  If anyone can think of a less risky solution I'd be grateful for suggestions.

Thanks folks - as always your collective wisdom and insight is mutely appreciated.

[attachment=1:36dd9vij] ia1 IMG_3830.jpg ia1 [/attachment:36dd9vij] - The black rubber cap should just be a dust cover, but it's got the top of the adjustment screw stuck in it and the bottom of the screw is stuck in the hole...

Was the nut that keeps unscrewing supplied with the dampers and if so has it been reused?

I ask because the nuts on the standard top mounts are non reusable so I imagine the nuts supplied by Tein will be the same, I have found the following explanation:

"Non reusable fasteners, called "prevailing torque nuts," are deformed into an elliptical shape during the manufacturing process (while they're still hot). During the tightening process, the bolt or axle shaft stretches the nut into a round shape. Even after "rounding out," the nut retains enough elliptical distortion to prevent loosening.

Car makers use two types of non-reusable prevailing torque nuts: the center locknut style and the toplock variety. The center locknut version can be installed from either end, since the deformed portion is located in the middle of the nut. However, a toplock nut can only be installed one way, since the deformed end can't engage the threads. Whichever style is on your vehicle, make sure you buy a new nut after removing the old one. The old nut will not hold the proper torque a second time."

I believe this type of nut is used on the top mounts because of the high level of vibration sustained.

I think Patrick is correct regarding the nut.  The adjuster, however is a real problem because there is a reason for the breakage, which (I suspect) is that the bottom half is seized in its seat.  I think this is a job for a specialist shock absorber shop.  Get it wrong and the unit will be permanently damaged.

I'd send it to TEIN UK for a full refurbish. I could be wrong but I believe the pricing is somewhere in the region of £400 for all 4 and includes painting. I've found them to be very helpful.

Thanks everyone for your input, one of the things that makes these cars really great is the community that loves them.

I bought them second hand, but yes these were the ones which came and I assume the originals.  Strange that it's only one that's coming loose though, but that definitely sounds like the cause of the problem.

I agree, two of the others were quite stiff when I loosened them off...  If I'd applied any brain power at all I'd have put some WD40 or silicon spray on first to ease them off...  Isn't hindsight wonderful!   s:lol:  s:lol:

Thanks, I only paid that much for the set to start with though and if I'm going to spend out again I'd rather just buy a brand new setup.  As it's almost time to hide her away for the winter, maybe I'll just start saving up now!
