Fitting Oil Temp/Pressure Monitoring Dials...

Hey all, looking for a bit of advice.

New 2ZZ-ge is fitted and seems to be working well, HOWEVER - I would like to protect my investment!!

I would like, Ideally, to monitor Oil Pressure (vital), Oil Temp (Very important) And Water Temp (Nice to have, can rely on the dash gauge if needs be for now).

As I understand it, I needs gauges, sensors, and a sandwich plate to allow fitment of those sensors.. (Bear with me, you're dealing with an idiot here...)

If I buy: A Dual digital gauge like this

In the Oil Pressure/Temp configuration, and a Sandwich plate to sit between the oil filter and the block, wire up the sensors that sit in the sandwich plate, and programme the gauges, it should work, right??? A mornings work.....

Incidentally, I absolutely love the look of this Apexi 3 dial digital display, but yeah, better part of £400.... so... naaahh.

INcidentlaly, I have seen an oil cooler kit, but I'm wary of spending all my money in one go, and also I don't want to fit something I may not need, so I'd rather monitor oil temps and see how I go stock, for now. It's just a matter of swapping the sandwich plate if I want to upgrade later.

Oil stats are underrated.
Hell, I still want to install my vacuum gauge...

I'd love it to somehow be loggable via obdII on my torque app.... Why oh why doesn't the ecu measure oil pressure?! Would be so easy!

I don't think anything short of a full race telemetry system will add that functionality, so for now I'm going to KISS.

Especially frustrating as it has an oil pressure sensor sitting there by the oil filter.

I've often wondered if I can tap into that and translate the readings. But it'd be easier and cheaper to get  a gauge and sensor  s:) :) s:)

Sensors should come with the gauges, I had to buy additional electrical wires to extend the wiring they send as it's usually for a car with engine in the front. You can take the Bins out  to route wiring or you can fish the wiring through the driver's side grommet if you remove the seatbelt plastic trim and sill plastic(frustrating but doable). Take power connections from back of stereo or Speedo cluster dependant on where you put gauge pod. Half a day should be plenty

My feeling is that a fast acting pressure gauge is a very good track tool.  It also acts as a temperature gauge, as the pressure will drop as the oil warms up.  I look for around 20 psi at idle to know it's fully up to temp.  It will also catch any pressure dips going round the corners.

It's not a pressure transducer - it's a simple go/no-go switch

That explains it then  s:) :) s:)  Lazy Toyota! What's the difference?? They could have put a proper sensor in

As Steve says, it's an oil pressure switch.  Which is how just about all idiot light oil pressure systems are done.  One could put a tee on that outlet, and retain the switch and add a transducer.  as it's a bugger to get to, the sandwich plate is just easier.

Thanks Carolyn. I'll check my chosen gauge to see if it has the resolution/reaction rate that I want, if not I might go cheaper!

I also need to install that photo bucket fix to understand your guide! I'm pretty OK with wiring stuff though, car audio got me past my fear of pulling dashboards/trim apart.

OK, so I've got a pair of 52mm gauges en route... Anyone got any smart solutions for mounting them? At the moment I'm thinking in the flip up cubby on the centre of the dash, in a cheap dual gauge pod. Any better solutions or bespoke roadster gauge pods about? I certainly don't want them on the A-pillar or down by the gearstick.

I decided to pass on the temperature gauge for two reasons.  First: The pressure gauge doubles as a temperature gauge and second: Mounting two gauges created the problem of where to put them both.
If you really do want both gauges, it seems that sacrificing the top middle cubby-hole for a pod set-up is the tidiest and in a good line of sight, as you observed.  I think, if you do some searching, you can find some images of decent looking pods in that situation. (Edit: Found this:  m http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=41341 m  and a tidier looking one,  m http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=41652 m )
This is my single gauge mount.

Thank you carolyn. As Even , I'll have a short day to fit these, so here's hoping it goes well!

Really not a fan of putting a brand new engine through it's paces on track without having these dials up and running.

Totally agree.  I wouldn't go on track without a fast acting pressure gauge.  Seriously, though, once the idle pressure is showing below 30 psi, you're up to temp.

I hear what you're saying re redundancy of oil temp gauge, but I really want to keep an eye on that too. If prolonged track time starts to push oil temps past sensible, I'll look at a cooler too. I really want an indicator of how much heat soak is going on.

Can see your point for track use.

That looks pretty cool!
There's not much info on it though...?
Couple of pertinent questions-
- would it fit nicely in a navpod
- what's the reaction time like?

Edit - just found this:

Says it can't do the "danger to the manifold" warning though.. Bit of disappointment that...

Edit 2: Gary did you remember to order this as well?

Being a cheap Chinese clone I'm not going to set my sights to high, but I had some store credit so it's not cost me a great deal
Controller is included in the purchase.  It's the full system with the required sensors

Hmm, sender for the oil pressure looks pretty hefty. Instructions recommend remote mounting it..

Need to look into that.

Looking for solutions, all I get is problems!
