I have often wondered if the plastic arches on cars actually cause more harm than they prevent.

I'm big into jet washing like hell under arches etc full of nooks for salt to sit I always feel

If you remember cars prior to plastic arch protectors you will know that the metal underside of the arch was a great place for road dirt to turn into mud with dampness which was like holding a moist sponge to the then poorly protected steel, all the necessary ingredients for rust which could be seen on many cars of that era. A blast with a hose, home jet washers weren't around then, by diligent owners helped keep this erosion at bay.
I believe the plastic arch protectors give less places for dirt to accumulate and the steel bodywork is generally far better protected now than previously.
