I have seen Dad diaries MR2 (https://www.youtube.com/user/DualBoot101) repair videos and  I can say that I have no rust anywhere.

I pulled the filter out of my 1997 BMW a couple of years ago, it had 180k miles on it and was the 2.8 so it had undoubtedly had some fuel run through it. It was as clean as a whilstle inside. I think what with petrol being a strong solvent, and UK petrol supplies being decent, it's basically a self cleaning system.
