MR2 Recall 15/2/05 [also pre-cat update]

Anyone any info on a recall mentioned in today's Autoexpress concerning corrosion in the brake master cylinder, resulting in risk of brake failure. Apparently nearly 2500 cars may be affected? My local dealer knows nothing about it [sounds familiar].
I've had an e-mail from my MR2 supplier [from Denmark] who throws some light on the pre-cat failure problem and this is reassuring. I forwarded the mailing to the honest john website [Daily Telegraph] and he thought it authoritative enough to publish the details on his site. I paste the details below:

"When I first read it, I was quite sure I had never heard anything about engine problems/failures with MR2's. But I decided to check our technical database anyway, and there actually was something about it.

The problem appears to be, that "Excessive accelleration - deceleration during the engine was cold, brought excessive vibration at Manifold portion then the converter holding pressure on Converter Holding Mat has been decreased and Converter has been moved".

As a countermeasure, to increase the converter holding pressure, the Converter Holding Mat has been improved from October 2001.

This countermeasure is implemented from frame number ...0043748 onwards, and your car has frame number ...50475 so your car is already equipped with the improved manifold. So I'm quite sure you can keep your car and (continue to) have a lot of pleasure driving it.

Should you speak to other MR2 owners, there is a new manifold available so they can have it changed. I'm not sure if it's under "extended warranty" if the car is more than 3 years old, but it may be worth a try".

Yep, I meant the cat stuff. All new to me... The master cylinder thing is repost, so I have to agree with you there. this must be the 10th time Ive seen it... s:roll: :roll: s:roll:

I have a 2004/5 production manifold at work, and there are slight differences to the piping configuration on it. I also have an 8mm borescope with image capturing, (similar to the camera doctors shove down your throat to look in your stomach) so I'll see if I can take a few pics of the cat matrix support matting through the O2 sensor hole.

This is what Honest John actually has on his MR2 site, as part of the problems with an Mr2

"Complaints of pre-cat in exhaust manifold breaking up and debris being sucked into engine.
Caused by "excessive accelleration - deceleration when the engine is cold causing vibration of the manifold and the car matrix moving in its holding mat, then breaking up. Holding mat improved from October 2001, VIN ...0043748. For older cars, new manifold available and some possibility of goodwill from Toyota towards the cost. More on this at w www.mr2roc.org w "

I don't know whether my Danish supplier has provided the definitive reply to the MR2 pre-cat problem. I do know that he has no axe to grind and has been very helpful when I have e-mailed various queries to him. I paste another mailing, which might help:

"Hi Bill.
I'm always glad I can help. As you can see, it's not a fault as such, but a combination of the way the car may be driven. Toyota always talks about "Kaizen", the continuous improvement process, so when they discovered the manifold could be better, they improved it. And as I said, when you asked I had never heard of any problems. Maybe it's one of those things where 3 feathers grows into 5 hens :-) :-) :-) "

We all know guys who have an uncanny knack of destroying anything mechanical they come in contact with. I suspect that the MR2ROC forum has a capacity to generate hens out of feathers as well ;0)

Sounds a good explaination to me, BUT to say "never heard of any MR2 engine failures" echoes MrT's standard response.
