Drain hole gunge and the sills

Hi all,

I got round to cleaning out the drain holes on my MR2 this evening. Despite having read about this before I was thinking "how bad can it be?". Well, mine were awful! So much crud came out and on one side I found no water was able to get through at all... god knows where the water was going when it rained.

What I wished I had done was rig up some sort of sieve to catch the gunk as it came out. Instead it's dropped in to the pit of oblivion that is the gap between the panels and the sills. I'm wondering if the design of the car in this way will exacerbate corrosion (I'm guessing "yes") because the water from the drain holes goes through the gap of the sills. So, rain water + some gunge + small gap between metal sheets = doomed sills?

I understand your concern regarding the sills, but it pretty much drops straight out a drain hole underneath.

I've been around here for six years and am unable to recall a car with sills that have rotted out - unlike another, more common Japanese roadster with an engine in the wrong place!

As a test, pour some water down the drain and check it drops straight through the bottom of the sill.  If you have a look underneath you should be able to see the aperture it drops out of.

If they were that bad it might be an idea to also drop the arch liners and see how much is in the "V" where the body panels meet. I raked a fair bit out of mine the other month.

Thinking about this, I've fitted skirts to mine recently and bonded them along the outer sill, fingers crossed it hasn't blocked the drain gap.

If you've bonded it to the outside of the sill I can't see there is any problem.

From memory the holes are underneath, right where the sill meets the floor pan.

Just poor some water on the side of your hood and have a look underneath if you're worried...

Yeah, I follow and agree with what you're saying, just had a bit of brain ache when I first read it. More sleep needed![emoji38]

+1 for more sleep CTM! :)
There are some people on here, who judge those who spend a little more time in bed than others!! You are proof positive of my point. Thanks. :)
