As the tappet gaps tends to get smaller, and buckets are expensive, is turning down the inside centre nub of the bucket to increase the gap a possibility?

Someone will be along with the exact answer on this but I believe someone has a stock pile of buckets that they will trade with you if they have ones that match the size you need.
Hope this helps to some extent.

The valve clearance (generally) tends to get bigger.  So turning down buckets is not a solution.  What everyone ends up needing is fatter buckets.

If your valves have gone tight, that's quite unusual.

There's a 'how to' on the subject.

While 3 of the 16 have opened and 4 are 'spot on' the remainder have closed up. The only other twin cam with solid lifters I have worked on is an XK all of which closed up,valve wear and pocketing more than compensating for valve train wear. This was usual.

I didn't think the idea of turning down the centre nub of cam buckets through properly. Camshafts are made from surface (case) hardened steel (nitrided for top end). Cam followers must have the same scuff resistance as the cam which means they must be the same surface hardened steel. Removing the surface of surface hardened steel is not a good idea. End of story.

Carolyn

That IS unusual on a 1ZZ because of the way the valve seats are done on these.

As you say, grinding the buckets isn't an option.  However as you are in the unusual potion of needing thinner buckets, I'm sure they can be found from the club.  With three loose and six tight, you may only need two or three to get there.

When you know what sizes you need, let us know.

Hi, I have asked Spit to send me his 'bucket bank'.  The motivation for my (unsuccessful) lateral thinking of turning down the nub was to keep the same cam lobe on the same follower. Just a throwback to pushrod days when putting the valve train bits back in the same place was considered to be good practice.

Okum's Razor, the simplest explanation is the most likely explanation. When it got inside I noticed the arrow on one of the bearing caps was facing the wrong way. Someone has been inside before.

Carolyn

When you've done your thing with the bucket bank, would you please send it on to me?

I cleared this with Spit at Ding day.

I'll pm my address.

cheers
